From the Ferme-auberge du Felsach to the Grand Ventron via the Chaume de Vintergès

Starting from the Ferme-auberge du Felsach, a magnificent ridge path crosses the Grand Ventron National Nature Reserve. Old beech forests and preserved beech-fir forests give way to open heathland, offering superb views over the Saint-Amarin valley and the Lorraine Vosges. This route is a round trip, with a short circular loop around the Grand Ventron.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the Ferme-auberge du Felsach (access via the Col d’Oderen and Ventron; a few kilometres after the pass on the descent, turn right onto the small road leading to the Felsach).

(S/E) From the car park and the Ferme-auberge de Felsach, head straight up the slope, following the Blue Triangle/Blue Rectangle path, towards Haut de Felsach and Grand Ventron.

(1) At Haut de Felsach (1161 m), follow the ridge path, marked Blue Rectangle, which leads to Grand Ventron. It crosses a pasture lane, then plunges down a forest path. At the bottom of this, turn left towards the Abri du Vintergès.

(2) Continue behind the Abri du Vintergès, to the right, along the path (Blue Rectangle) which climbs through the forest, goes round the hilltop, and returns to it.

(3) Once past the hilltop, continue along the same path and cross a steep, uphill section leading up to the Tête du Chat Sauvage.

(4) At the Tête du Chat Sauvage, then descend to a small forest pass.

(5) At the small forest pass, at the foot of the Tête du Chat Sauvage, head back up via the Blue Rectangle, keeping to the right at the fork, towards Le Petit Ventron.

(6) At Petit Ventron, stay firmly on the ridge line (still the GR®531©), heading north towards Grand Ventron and its summit scree. Reach the summit and its orientation table

(7) At the orientation table, leave the GR®531© and descend via the Yellow Triangle, to the left. The path passes in front of a Refuge du Club Alpin Français and joins the road leading to the former Grand Ventron inn, currently being converted into a nature reserve visitor centre.

(8) Follow the road to the left for just over a kilometre, ignoring a path on the left and another on the right.

(9) After just over a kilometre, turn left onto a track that joins the Blue Rectangle path from the outward journey.

(9) Continue towards the Col d'Oderen, following the reverse route of the outward journey, which leads back to the Ferme-auberge du Felsach (S/E).
