The hills above Les Mas

A circular route that mainly follows wide, easy paths, offering views of the unforgettable landscapes of the Alpilles. From the top of the hills, there is a sweeping 360° panorama over the Crau plain, the Étang de Berre, and the surrounding hills. The actual elevation gain is 240 m according to my altimeter.

Description of the walk

Coming from the south on the D25A, park in the small car park on the right-hand side at the bottom of the village (bus shelter); there are always spaces available. Sign: “Saint-Roch 702 Salon de Provence”

(S/E) Walk up the street towards the village centre (D25A), via Avenue Saint-Roch and Rue Neuve.

(1) In the village, follow Avenue des Alpilles to the left and then, a little further on, Chemin des Estendedous. From here, follow the red and white markings (for 5 km,GR®653A). A little further on, take Chemin de Saint-Jean on the right.

(2) At the DFCI sign, take the track on the left.

(3) At the signpost, follow signs for Mouries via Le Destet. Take the path just after, on the right, to admire a cave a little further on.

(4) Turn right at the junction.

(5) Turn left onto a yellow-marked path (leaving theGR®) and, immediately, follow the path up the hill.

(6) At the top, continue straight on to reach the other hill below. On the second hill, head right to join a track below (unmarked path). Continue straight on along the track, over a small rocky outcrop, then descend towards the canal.

(7) Pass under the canal, then turn left, following the canal. Along a viaduct, take the path on the right. Keep right at the junction.

(8) At the signpost, turn left towards Aureille. Cross a small metal bridge. At the ‘Give Way’ sign, turn right to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

From 1 June to 30 September, access to the Alpilles mountains is restricted; check the dedicated website for daily updates.
Avoid this hike in hot weather (very hot region), especially as there are no drinking water points (apart from the village fountains), which is why you must be very careful about the water you take with you, and a hat is essential.

Worth a visit

If you have a little time, take a stroll through the village; every little street has something to see – a detail, a beautiful window generously adorned with flowers, an old door weathered by time, a fountain, a wash house...

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

As of 26/02/2026, no encounters apart from the shepherd and his sheep and goats! A magnificent view once you've finished the climb!👍

The weather was beautiful for this hike. The location is pleasant and at the top, the view stretches far and wide, offering a 360° panorama.
There was a dilemma at one point regarding the description, but it was quickly resolved using the Visorando app.
A walk in the Alpilles with easy parking and a water source nearby.

A very pleasant, easy walk.
A short climb to the summit is well worth the effort to discover a stunning 360-degree view of the ridge.

A pleasant walk; there was no mistral and the weather was fine.
A steep, direct climb over the scree up the hill, but it doesn’t take long.
If it were foggy, the rest of the route could be tricky without a GPS track.
We discovered the Canal des Baux and looked into its history.
Thanks to the author of the walk.

We didn’t go up the hills and stayed along the canal, so from point 5 we went straight to point 7. A very pleasant route.
