Les Allières, Grandes Roches de Saint-Michel and Les Ramées

An extraordinary hike, passing through the little-visited Combe Oursière and offering an unusual ascent through the sharp limestone pavement towards Grand Cheval (Grandes Roches de Saint-Michel). Magnificent views over the Trièves, the Taillefer and, in good weather, Mont Blanc. A hike best suited to summer or autumn, requiring a good sense of direction and reserved for experienced walkers.

Description of the walk

Set off from the car park halfway up the access road to the snow stadium. If there are no spaces left, park in the snow stadium car park, opposite the start of the cross-country ski trails.

(S/E) Head south and follow the signs for Les Allières, keeping to the right-hand side of the road. Once past the stopover lodge, turn left towards Combe Oursière; the path runs alongside the route to Pic Saint Michel for about 100 metres.

(1) Just after crossing the cross-country ski trail (off-limits to walkers), take the steep climb to the left (yellow and green markings; a GPS device or smartphone GPS app is required from this point onwards).
At the top of this challenging climb, you’ll look out over the Combe Oursière. Unlike those who turn south towards Pic Saint-Michel, continue north for about fifty metres until you come to a rock marked with a Yellow Cross and a Green Cross.

(2) Pass this cross and continue along the well-marked path; you will naturally veer into the Combe Oursière. Cross the valley and follow the poorly marked route opposite (GPS); admire the almost vertical sharp limestone pavements and climb up a faint path to their left. Check your GPS frequently until you reach a wide forest track descending towards the snow stadium on the left, which is a circular track that loops back up to the right.

(3) Cross it and take the path opposite which leads to the top of the Lans-en-Vercors ski runs. There are no further difficulties at this point. Head to the top station of the first chairlift.

(4) It’s best to head up above the top station of the first chairlift; there’s a path at the very top of the summit. Climb up along the edge of the cliff (be careful!), where you’ll have a stunning view of the Trièves, the Taillefer and the other mountain ranges.

(5) Head back down and continue along the rest of the path at the very top of the ridge, following the direction of ‘le Belvédère’ (blue signs). Reach the viewpoint.

(6) From here, you can step out over the edge to admire the scenery. Then, head down the track and follow the signs for the Habert Lodge (north).

(7) Turn slightly left to pass in front of it, and 100 metres further on, take the small path that starts to the left of the main track and, 200 metres later, crosses another cross-track. Turn right, walk alongside the rock and, further down, join the wideGR®91(marked in white and red). Follow it uphill for about 300 metres.

(8) Leave the descending path on your left and, at the hairpin bend, take the path on the left to reach the Croix des Ramées.

(9) Stunning view over the valley. No markings at this point. Turn back and head down theGR®91for about fifty metres.

(8) Turn right onto the descent towards “Lans-en-Vercors” and “Les Jeux”, following the yellow and green markings.

(10) A few metres further on, pass the Pas de la Tinette on your right and take the descending track opposite – reserved for snowshoes in winter – which leads you back towards the Combe des Virets and then down to the bottom of the slopes.

From there, make your way back to your car at the bottom of the slopes at the Lans-en-Vercors ski centre (S/E).

Notes

The Lodge des Allières is the only source of water. Abri des Ramées.

Hiking boots, walking poles and a GPS.
Following the ridge can be misleading; take care at the edge! This hike is for experienced walkers only.

Make sure you have a GPS and the Visorando or Iphigénie app, as finding your way whilst ascending the Combe Oursière towards Grand Cheval is not straightforward (hence this hike being classified as ‘difficult’).
A 1:25,000 map is essential; a compass is useful.

Worth a visit

The Lodge des Allières welcomes you during the season for a break. Advance booking required for lunch

Hello, could you please tell me what you think is a bit off in the description so that I can correct it?
Especially if you’ve done it the other way round...

We did the route in the opposite direction, heading towards PAS DE LA TINETTE at the end of the walk, then climbed up to PIC ST MICHEL. Total distance: 15 km; elevation gain: 853 m. Using the VISORANDO app on my mobile, I had no trouble finding my way.

A lovely route, with a few minor variations. In clear weather, with just the map extract, you can easily manage without a GPS or compass. There are plenty of landmarks along this circular loop, which circles the Sierre ski area (Lans-en-Vercors). The guidebook is very detailed, particularly at (2), where the short, unmarked path begins – though its starting point is clearly visible. I think a ‘medium’ difficulty rating would be sufficient.

La Croix des Ramées is located a few dozen metres off the GR91 on the descent. The view over the Lans valley is well worth the detour.

Thank you for suggesting this walk

Oh yes, Skyppy, the view of the Croix des Ramées is a local classic. And it’s true that some people – those with their noses to the handlebars – tend to forget it.
As for me, every time I pass by I make a detour, and on Sunday it was even more beautiful with that picture-perfect weather.
Good luck with your new route.

Did you like the view from the Croix des Ramées? Lots of people miss it – what a shame!!

I’m also planning a lower-altitude circular route, starting at the halfway-up car park, passing by the bottom of the Lans slopes, climbing up to the Croix des Ramées, then descending via the Pas de la Tinette, Les Jeux and Lans, and climbing back up via the Combe du Crêt and Les Allières
I’ve done it twice already: once before I discovered Visorando, and then again afterwards, but without a phone or a camera – so with no notes on landmarks and no photos from the bottom, it’s hard to describe it exactly!

We did this yesterday on a shorter circular route: setting off from the Snow Stadium car park – Croix des Ramées – Cabane des Ramées – the viewpoint, and then down the slopes opposite the car park.
An excellent hike, though admittedly a little busy (there were about 500 cars parked in the car park), but that’s to be expected in this autumnal summer. People are out hiking and some are using campervans to reach their destinations.
The viewing platform (a footbridge overlooking the drop) was built in 2014 by the municipality of Lans-en-Vercors. This footbridge and the safety barriers alongside it ensure the safety of this site, which is very popular in both winter and summer. In winter, a ski lift takes skiers to the top of the eastern cliff face of the Vercors, which offers a vertical drop of around 400m. Safety measures are essential, and these are now in place year-round with this metal barrier running along the ridge.
This is a hike suitable for the whole family; the children here enjoyed the view of the drop below in complete safety.
