The tour of the hamlet of Dormillouse

Dormillouse, a hamlet in the canton of Vaud tucked away at the far end of the Fressinière Valley, is as charming as ever. Steeped in history, it served as a refuge for persecuted peoples and saw a resurgence of interest after 1968 as people sought a return to nature.
It is also the only village in the Écrins National Park that is inhabited all year round.
This route features a circular loop through the meadows beyond the hamlet of Romans. This little-visited section offers wonderful views in the evening light.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the very end of the D238.

(S/E) Head towards the far end of the car park, leaving the footbridge crossing the Torrent de Chichin on your right. This is the winter route. You will soon cross the Torrent des Oules. From the bridge, you may spot a few canyoning enthusiasts practising their jumps. You’ll reach the viewpoint overlooking the waterfalls fairly quickly.

(1) Signpost: leave the path leading to Lac du Fangeas on your left. Continue along the path towards Dormillouse (sign). There’s no confusion – the signs lead to Dormillouse. At an altitude of around 1,681 metres, you’ll reach the Pont des Enfous, which leads to the lower part of the hamlet. You can wander amongst the houses, all of which are typical of the area, although it’s a shame about the satellite dishes, whose white colour stands out in every photo! Climb gradually amongst the houses, passing the chapel and the lodge (a former school).

(2) Leave the old road – which is no longer maintained (signpost) – on your right, and turn left to reach Les Romans, the upper hamlet. In our opinion, it is in this hamlet that you’ll see the most traditional houses. Continue along this path as you leave the hamlet; this is the direction of the Palluel and Faravel Lakes. Walk for about 300 metres, and you’ll already have a very pleasant view on your left.

(3) Signpost: Palluel and Faravel Lakes, Col Freyssiniere. Leave the path towards the lakes and take a track on the left which will take you across the Torrent des Combes. There was no water in August 2016, and the path leading uphill is in poor condition.
Walk a short distance southwards and you’ll come to the Torrent de Chichin. Cross it via a superb stone arch that you’ll spot at the last moment.

(4) Once you’ve crossed the torrent, take the path on the right. It climbs slightly and leads you out onto a plateau, which was once farmed. You’ll walk between stone embankments marking the boundaries of old enclosures.

(5) At this junction, head south (signpost) towards Dormillouse via Les Enflous. This section is the most scenic part of the route. The light is beautiful, the area is quiet, and it’s the perfect spot for some lovely photos. To return, continue for about 300 metres, still heading south, until you reach another junction.

(6) Take the path that descends sharply to the left and leads back towards the hamlet. The other path heads towards Lake Faravel. Walk downhill until you rejoin the path you took on the way up, just before the Pont des Enflous.
Follow the path you took on the way up; the signs indicate ‘Parking’. Towards the end of the walk, you’ll see the waterfall again – the light will have changed, as will the flow of the water.
In a few minutes, you’ll arrive back at your starting point (S/E).

Notes

This is a family-friendly walk, with the chance to spot a few marmots at the end of the day.
Standard mountain kit: shoes (preferably high-top), walking poles, a cap and sunglasses.
And, just in case, rainwear.
You can top up your water supplies in the village, opposite the mountain hut. You can eat, drink and stay overnight at the mountain hut.

After (3), if there is water, or if the path is too badly worn, head back to the previous junction (3), continue for about 100 metres, cross the Torrent des Combes via the bridge, then turn left immediately and follow the stream; this will take you back onto the route (the path is not marked on IGN maps, but is clearly visible on the Géoportail aerial images).

You are hiking in the heart of the Écrins National Park.

The Écrins massif is an exceptional area, open to all, with a natural, cultural and scenic heritage that is truly unique. To protect these treasures, the heart of the park is marked by blue-white-red flags, and certain regulations must be observed within this area. Please familiarise yourself with these regulations when planning your hike, to help preserve this shared heritage, at https://www.ecrins-parcnational.fr.

Worth a visit

You are in the Écrins National Park, with all its wonders and restrictions.
Read the sign at the end of the car park carefully; it provides interesting information about local history.
There are plenty of photo opportunities, both in the village and further along the route, with scenery of mountains and plateaus, and perhaps even some marmots.
Numerous species of flowers can be found here.
The evening light is ideal, and it’s cooler for the climb.

A very popular walk++, absolutely charming, with a few information boards to help you understand the hamlet’s rich history.
Technically, I’m quite fit and had no trouble, but I saw several people struggling on the climb, so I’d like to clarify a few points so you don’t imagine this walk to be as ‘easy’ as some people make it out to be:
• the ascent (and descent) is long (> 30 mins) to the first bridges; it’s stony and gruelling in the midday sun… though otherwise shaded
• Between points 3 and 4, there’s a short, technical section with a steep gradient; it’s narrow and definitely not “easy” (I wouldn’t take anyone elderly or with little walking experience there)
It’s good to be forewarned; I hope you have a lovely walk.

I loved the hamlet, and even more so the hike around the lakes to the south towards Fangias > Lake Faravel (more popular) and then Lake Palluel. Excluding the hamlet, it took me 5 hours 30 minutes without breaks (off-topic? ;-)

A lovely walk through the woods and fields, passing waterfalls and chalets. A short, easy and pleasant hike, even in the middle of July

A rather pleasant walk.
We did it in mid-August 2024 with two children aged 5 and 8. We set off at 10am. The car park was full, but the hikers spread out over several routes.
The walk starts with a good climb in the cool morning air. There are lots of wild raspberries along the way. The hamlet is charming, with a few places to stop for a drink and/or a bite to eat.
The most pleasant and bucolic part is after the houses. Be sure to follow the detour between points 3 and 4 (due to the landslides of 2023).
The area between points 5 and 6 is idyllic for a picnic. It's a pretty plain where you'll be alone in the world. You can quietly observe marmots in an enchanting setting.
It's a lovely walk, very accessible for children and fairly short (2½ hours).

A magnificent hike. Right from the start, there are some fairly steep climbs in the shade, with superb waterfalls along the way. When we reached the hamlet of Dormillouse, we crossed the bridge where there is another waterfall. The water is ice blue and flows quite strongly. It's magnificent. There are places to eat if you don't want to carry a picnic.(Three different places) We decided to take a break for ice cream and blueberry tart at Chez Emile, which was magical. We sat on the terrace overlooking the mountains, as if we were alone in the world... it was hard to leave! A real little paradise. Then we spread out around the hamlet to look at the mountain chalets. A very beautiful circular.

An extremely pleasant route with ample parking.
Beautiful 360° views of the mountains enhanced by stunning waterfalls that are a constant delight.
An added bonus is a snack break at the end of the hike, with a "drink + homemade tart" offer at a very reasonable price.

Thank you for this really enjoyable hike. I just have one small comment to make regarding point 3 (and to avoid an accident): you ask us to leave the direction of the lakes and take the path on the left to cross the Combes torrent. It is better to continue along the lakeside path and walk above the stream, as the path along the Combes stream is virtually non-existent following heavy rainfall. Apart from this very tricky section, the hike is really beautiful.

A lovely walk.
Between 2 and 3, above Les Romans, the path is closed by a sheep gate. It is possible to go through, but remember to close it behind you.
At 5, there are many marmots.

On Monday, 9 July 2018, beyond the hamlet of Les Romans to reach the old bridge, there is water in the stream, but this does not bother children or adults at all. However, the climb back up is not easy, as the avalanche has washed away a small part of the path. We were unable to get through, but perhaps others with longer legs would have succeeded!
