The tour of the hamlet of Dormillouse

Dormillouse, a Vaudois hamlet hidden at the bottom of the Fressinière Valley, is as charming as ever. Steeped in history, it was a refuge for persecuted populations and enjoyed a resurgence of interest after 1968 as people sought a return to nature.
It is also the only village in the Écrins National Park that is inhabited all year round.
This route features a circular loop through the meadows beyond the hamlet of Romans. This rarely visited area offers wonderful views in the evening light.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the end of the D238.

(S/E) Head to the back of the car park, leaving the footbridge that crosses the Torrent de Chichin on your right. This is the winter route. You will quickly cross the Torrent des Oules. From the bridge, you may see some canyoning enthusiasts practising their jumps. You will soon arrive at the viewpoint overlooking the waterfalls.

(1) At the signpost, leave the path that leads to Lac du Fangeas on your left. Continue along the path towards Dormillouse (sign). There is no ambiguity, the signs lead to Dormillouse. At an altitude of 1681 metres, you will arrive at Pont des Enfous, which leads to the lower part of the hamlet. You can wander among the houses, all of which are typical, even if the satellite dishes, whose white colour stands out in all the photos, are a bit of an eyesore! Climb gradually between the houses, passing in front of the chapel and the lodge (former school).

(2) Leave the old road, which is no longer maintained (signpost), on your right and turn left to reach Les Romans, the upper hamlet. In our opinion, this hamlet has the most typical houses. Continue along this path as you leave the hamlet, heading towards Lacs Palluel and Faravel. After about 300 metres, you will already have a very pleasant landscape on your left.

(3) Sign: Lacs Palluel et Faravel, Col Freyssiniere. Leave the lakes behind and take a path on the left that will take you across the Torrent des Combes. There is no water in August 2016, and the path uphill is deteriorating.
Walk a little further south and you will come to the Torrent de Chichin. Cross it via a superb stone arch that you will only see at the last moment.

(4) Once you have crossed the torrent, take the path on the right. It climbs a little and leads to a plateau that was cultivated in the past. You will walk between stone embankments that mark the boundaries of old enclosures.

(5) At this crossroads, head south (signpost) towards Dormillouse via Les Enflous. This is the most beautiful part of the route. The light is stunning and the area is quiet, making it perfect for taking photos. To return, continue for about 300 metres, still heading south, until you reach another crossroads.

(6) Take the path that descends steeply to the left and leads back to the hamlet. The other path leads to Lac de Faravel. Continue downhill until you reach the path you took on the way up, just before Pont des Enflous.
Take the same path you took on the way up, signposted Parking. At the end of the route, you will see the waterfall again, but the light will have changed, as will the flow.
In a few minutes, you will arrive back at your starting point (S/E).

Notes

This is a family hike, with the possibility of seeing some marmots at the end of the day.
Bring standard mountain gear, shoes (preferably high-top), walking sticks, a cap and sunglasses.
And, just in case, rainwear.
Water can be obtained in the village, opposite the refuge. Food, drink and accommodation are available at the refuge.

After (3), if there is water or if the path is too damaged, return to the previous crossroads (3), continue for about 100m, cross the Torrent des Combes on the bridge, immediately turn left along the torrent and you will rejoin the route (trail not marked on IGN maps, but clearly visible on Géoportail aerial images).

You are hiking in the heart of the Écrins National Park.

The Écrins massif is an exceptional area, open to all, with a rare natural, cultural and landscape heritage. To protect these treasures, the heart of the park is marked by blue, white and red flags, where regulations must be observed. Please familiarise yourself with these regulations when planning your hike in order to preserve this collective asset, at https://www.ecrins-parcnational.fr.

Worth a visit

You are in the Écrins National Park, with all its wonders and constraints.
Read the sign at the end of the car park carefully, as it provides interesting information about local history.
There are many photo opportunities in the village and along the rest of the route, with mountain and plateau landscapes and possibly marmots.
Many species of flowers can be found on the site.
The evening light is very favourable, and it is cooler for the climb.

A lovely walk through the woods and fields, passing waterfalls and chalets. A short, easy and pleasant hike, even in the middle of July

A rather pleasant walk.
We did it in mid-August 2024 with two children aged 5 and 8. We set off at 10am. The car park was full, but the hikers spread out over several routes.
The walk starts with a good climb in the cool morning air. There are lots of wild raspberries along the way. The hamlet is charming, with a few places to stop for a drink and/or a bite to eat.
The most pleasant and bucolic part is after the houses. Be sure to follow the detour between points 3 and 4 (due to the landslides of 2023).
The area between points 5 and 6 is idyllic for a picnic. It's a pretty plain where you'll be alone in the world. You can quietly observe marmots in an enchanting setting.
It's a lovely walk, very accessible for children and fairly short (2½ hours).

A magnificent hike. Right from the start, there are some fairly steep climbs in the shade, with superb waterfalls along the way. When we reached the hamlet of Dormillouse, we crossed the bridge where there is another waterfall. The water is ice blue and flows quite strongly. It's magnificent. There are places to eat if you don't want to carry a picnic.(Three different places) We decided to take a break for ice cream and blueberry tart at Chez Emile, which was magical. We sat on the terrace overlooking the mountains, as if we were alone in the world... it was hard to leave! A real little paradise. Then we spread out around the hamlet to look at the mountain chalets. A very beautiful circular.

An extremely pleasant route with ample parking.
Beautiful 360° views of the mountains enhanced by stunning waterfalls that are a constant delight.
An added bonus is a snack break at the end of the hike, with a "drink + homemade tart" offer at a very reasonable price.

Thank you for this really enjoyable hike. I just have one small comment to make regarding point 3 (and to avoid an accident): you ask us to leave the direction of the lakes and take the path on the left to cross the Combes torrent. It is better to continue along the lakeside path and walk above the stream, as the path along the Combes stream is virtually non-existent following heavy rainfall. Apart from this very tricky section, the hike is really beautiful.

A lovely walk.
Between 2 and 3, above Les Romans, the path is closed by a sheep gate. It is possible to go through, but remember to close it behind you.
At 5, there are many marmots.

On Monday, 9 July 2018, beyond the hamlet of Les Romans to reach the old bridge, there is water in the stream, but this does not bother children or adults at all. However, the climb back up is not easy, as the avalanche has washed away a small part of the path. We were unable to get through, but perhaps others with longer legs would have succeeded!
