Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the Auberge de la Chaumière.

Marked with blue rings.

(S/E) Cross the D465 and follow the path to the left heading north. It follows the E5 and E2GR®5. It passes by "la Chaumière".

(1) Further on, turn left and climb up alongside the ski lift. The path enters the forest and turns right until it reaches a small road.

(2) Cross and continue opposite into the meadow along the D465. Pass the Auberge du Ballon car park and arrive at the Col du Ballon d'Alsace at an altitude of 1,174 metres. The route leaves the E2GR®5and continues following the E5.

(3). At the pass, cross the D465 and continue to the car park opposite. Here you will find toilets and a picnic area where you can enjoy your lunch in the shelter. Admire the monument in tribute to the bomb disposal experts.
Continue, paying close attention to the markings, until you reach a fork in the road.

(4) At the crossroads, turn right, then right again onto Chemin Colas, which descends steadily. There is a sign and markings to help you. You will arrive at the D465.

(5) Without taking it, climb to the right and cross the Jumenterie pastures, keeping to the right. Climb back up to the edge of the road and turn left.

(6) The trail joins the forest and crosses the Roches de Morteville. This trail is on a ledge. Take a short 10-metre detour to see the Rocher du Gouffre. Several other viewpoints offer extensive views of the surrounding ridges and the Vallée des Charbonniers. Please note that this trail is difficult. There are several passages with ropes to hold on to. Reach the Col de Ronde Tête or "Rundkopf" (elevation 1091).

(7) Continue on the left. Reach the Ronde Tête and its crossroads.

(8) Turn right, the trail descends fairly quickly to reach a crossroads.

(9) Stay on the right-hand path. The path winds its way between rocks like a roller coaster. It passes through scree. From there, the path climbs, sometimes in tight hairpin bends. At its junction with the path coming from the road, it levels out and remains flat until Trou de la Chaudière. Pass to the right of the Manheimer ski lift hut. The path, still facing you, emerges behind the Auberge de la Chaumière.

(1) Return to the car park by following the route in reverse (S/E).

Notes

It is not recommended for people who are afraid of heights. The passage between (6) and (7) is technically challenging.

Departure from the Auberge de la Chaumière car park 2 km before the summit.
This car park is easy to find on the D465 road between Belfort and Ballon d'Alsace.
If the car park is full, there is another car park nearby called Des Redoutes on the D466, Route de Sewen.
You can also start from the Col du Ballon d'Alsace, where there is a car park.

Visorando was informed by Mr Chevalley, a volunteer member of balisage90, based on brochures published by the Belfort regional council.

The signposting for this hike was modified in 2023 to avoid the quiet zone of the Natura 2000 site.

This trail passes through the Roches de Morteville. It is accessible. It should not be confused with the footbridge trail a little further north, which has been closed since 2023.

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

Worth a visit

The Col du Ballon d'Alsace: a legendary pass well known to cyclists, which has seen many Tours de France, including the first in 1905.

Erected in 1952, the Monument des Démineurs also bears witness to the sacrifice of 600 men who, in 1945, took part in the demining of the Ballon.

The high-altitude beech forest
Although there are many types of forest adapted to the characteristics of each environment, the most remarkable is the high-altitude beech forest, also known as the bonsai forest because of its small size. Every winter, this forest is swept by westerly winds, which, combined with frost and snow, hinder its growth: small size, gnarled trunks and short branches.

Nearby attractions
The summit of Ballon d'Alsace, an exceptional natural site.
The summit discovery trail offers exceptional views of the adjacent valleys, the Vosges ridges and even the Alps on a clear day. This is a listed site, and the flora and fauna are protected by the Ballons Comtois Nature Reserve and Natura 2000.

A monumental history
Man has left his mark on the Ballon d'Alsace, with a statue of the Virgin Mary in 1860 and another of Joan of Arc in 1909, the still visible trenches of the First World War and the former border with Germany.

Great walk... Be careful with the snow, which makes it a bit more tiring, but it's worth it.

Superb hike!! The best place to picnic is after La Jumenterie (4), where there are several viewpoints overlooking the landscape.

A beautiful hike in dry summer weather.
The most beautiful part is the north-east face of the Ballon d'Alsace, which is both wild and steep with some stunning views.
The first half is on wider, shaded paths.
There are places to eat at the Ballon d'Alsace pass in the inns.

We did this beautiful hike in mid-August in dry weather.
Definitely worth doing in sunny weather. Moderate difficulty for people who are fit and wearing suitable footwear.
Moderate danger in dry weather. However, please watch your step.
Not recommended in rainy or snowy weather as the rocks become slippery.
Snowshoe alternative in case of snow, from the foot of La Jumenterie to the summit of Le Ballon. Leave the blue disc markings and take the path that goes straight up, marked with a red circle. Reach La Vierge, follow the ridge eastwards, then take the GR7 to Col de Ronde Tête to rejoin the blue disc markings.

Completed the circular route in less than 3 hours, taking it easy.
I was expecting a very complicated route since it was described as "very difficult": in the end, I didn't encounter any difficulties.
There must be a mistake; the level needs to be reviewed (medium at most).

Route completed on 22 February... Less than 5 cm of snow at the summit, but more than 20 cm of icy snow on the poorly exposed slopes of the route...Bring crampons, poles or ice axes for safety...............Be cautious and vigilant, but it's beautiful and wild...........

A beautiful hike with superb views, but we feel that the "Very difficult" rating is overestimated. There are a few narrow and slightly dizzying passages, but they pose no great difficulty for experienced and well-equipped walkers.

A beautiful hike, it is an official trail marked with blue rings.
We extended it with a return trip to Les Gentianes and La Vierge. (Follow signs for Auberge de Wisgrut.)
The very difficult rating is not really justified. There are a few rocky sections between La Jumenterie and the Col de Ronde Tête - tiring but neither dangerous nor difficult.
Can be done in either direction.
