The Tour des Tre Cime (the 3 peaks)

You will drive around the famous Tre Cime massif, neither too far nor too close, so you can admire it from all angles. Part of the route is very quiet, even in summer. No difficulty, just pure pleasure!

Description of the walk

Refuge Auronzo car park. Access conditions are specified in the practical information

(S/E) From the car park, pass below the refuge and follow the signposted path towards the Tre Cime and the Lavaredo Refuge.

(1) Pass in front of the Lavaredo refuge and continue on trail 101. Ignore the trail that climbs to your right. Arrive at Col Forcella Lavaredo, almost at the foot of the Tre Cime.

(2) Do not follow the marked trails, but take the trail that descends diagonally down the slope, sloping to the left until you reach a fork in the trails.

(3) Be careful not to go up, but keep left until you reach the cairn at a crossroads.

(4) Follow the path on the left and arrive at the Langalm Refuge (Col Forcinella).

(5) Meet up with the hikers coming from the Locatelli Refuge. There will be many more people. Head towards the Auronzo Refuge and continue to the top of the climb.

(6) Follow trail 105 towards the Auronzo Refuge (S/E).

Practical information

Access to the Refuge Auronzo car park (at least 200 spaces but very popular) is via a good tarmac road. It is located 7.5 km from Lake Misurina (when coming from the SR48).

In June 2025, I was informedthat it is necessary to reserve a parking space online. Otherwise, you will have to drive an additional 9 km.

Information from 2023:
- Possible by taking a "dolomiti" bus, for example from Cortina or Lake Misurani.
Example cost (to be confirmed): £10 when departing from the bus stop on the SR48 at Passe Tre Croci, located between Cortina and Misurina. This stop is located next to a hotel and a car park.
- Possible by car for £30 per car - valid until midnight on the same day. Please note that the car park is very large, but spaces are limited. There is a toll 4 km before the refuge. If the car park is full, you will have to turn around at the toll booth!
However, there is a high risk of waiting at the toll booth around 9 a.m. during high season. Some people have reported waiting for an hour and a half... for nothing, as the car park was full! Personally, I passed the toll booth around 8:15-8:30 a.m. and only waited 5-10 minutes to pay and continue the climb by car.

In the nearby area

The Passo Tre Croci is also the starting point for a hike to Lake Sorapis.
Lake Misurani below the starting point.
The small town of Dobiacco north of Misurina and its small lake can be a holiday destination.
Cortina d'Ampezzo is not far away by car or bus.

Coming from Cortina d'Ampezzo towards Misurina, we parked at the car park at the top of the hill once we had passed Lake Misurina (free and there were still spaces available when we arrived at 7.30 a.m.). We then walked towards the Alla Baita campsite, where the shuttle buses leave for the Auronzo refuge: €10 return ticket for one person. So if there are four of you, it's best to book a ticket in advance to park your car at the Auronzo refuge. We saw many cars pass before 10:00 a.m. and apparently they were able to park up there. The advantage of taking a bus is that you can buy your ticket on the spot without having to choose your day in advance. However, we waited an hour to get on a bus. The queue is very long and there are only shuttles every 30 minutes. Several buses passed us by full, so it may be worth checking to see if you can catch a bus earlier in another town. However, when we came back down at around 2pm, there was no queue. Going later in the day and paying close attention to the shuttle timetable may also be a good alternative. On arrival, there are public toilets (€1) before the Auronzo refuge. Up there, it can be quite cold if there is no sun and a bit of wind. Once you reach the pass, there are several possible routes. The one suggested is nice for getting some distance and taking beautiful photos of the Tre Cime. The tour is very beautiful, but you need clear weather to see the Tre Cime

In fact, on the section of the circuit from Col Forcella to the Langalm refuge, there is practically no one there in the morning, and the view is superb, close to the Three Peaks.

Don't hesitate, it's splendid and not really difficult.
Make sure you wear good walking shoes and take plenty of water with you.

Hello,

I have been trying to understand the reason behind the mass tourism that has been affecting the Dolomites in recent years. The French-speaking web does not say much, but the words Übertourismus (German) and overtourism (English) explain the phenomenon.

https://www.edit-magazin.de/wir-ersticke...

https://www.dw.com/en/south-tyrol-grappl...

At the root of the problem is UNESCO's classification, which seems to have the same detrimental effects on the natural environment as the "French favourite village" classification has on small villages.

The government is trying to curb it, but taking action after the fact is complicated. And upstream, they don't imagine that these classifications can have harmful effects.

As hikers, with a little searching, we can also find some very beautiful and uncrowded places. Otherwise, as mentioned above, we are contributing to the phenomenon.

It must be a very beautiful hike when the weather is nice, but unfortunately on foggy and rainy days you can hardly see anything.
It's tricky when you're only there for two days.

We hesitated between this hike and hike number 38976741, but in the end this one is much better because between points 4 and 5 you are right at the foot of the massif with enough distance and, above all, without the crowds.
Not to mention that the trail is much more technical, as it winds its way through scree falling from the Tre Cime. It feels a bit like you're on a proper hike.

Be careful, though, as the other parts are very busy.
I imagine that in the middle of August at 10 a.m. on a sunny Sunday, it's worse than the main walkway at Disneyland on a Sunday before Christmas.
Even in bad weather, there are crowds (20 to 30 people around you).

As for parking, we got through the barrier at 6:25 a.m. There was already one car in front of us and four behind us. Given how efficient the ticket clerk was, you should allow one minute per car.

If I have one piece of advice, it's to come on a beautiful day in June around 5:30 a.m. and enjoy the sunrise while doing this little loop.

Parking costs €30 for 12 hours and not a minute more. There are shuttles that leave from Dobiacco, but you have to plan ahead, otherwise all the return trips will be taken.

Hello, there are a lot of people until you reach the foot of the Tre Cime, but then there is hardly anyone until you reach the refuge. In my opinion, this rocky massif is worth walking for a while with other modest walkers who have also come to admire the Tre Cime. For me, it's a must-see.
Yes, it's crowded, but it's relatively spread out. And you and I are contributing to the "crowd"!
I hope you enjoyed it nonetheless. The main problem is access to the car park.

Hello,

has it been crowded since they were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or was it already like this before?

I'm adding it to my blacklist.

Many thanks to the author for all the information about access restrictions, which was very useful to us.
On Thursday 21 June 2024, as the sign at the start of the road leading up to the site indicated that the car park was full, we took the shuttle bus (free parking at the bus stop). I can confirm that the fare was £10 per person for a return ticket.
BUT it is important to note that buses do not have priority in the queue at the toll booth halfway up the road, so even by bus we waited 45 minutes at the toll booth to travel 200 metres!
The conclusion is that you have to go very early, but it's really worth it: this hike is absolutely magnificent, with breathtaking scenery in every direction!!!

Superb hike in the Dolomites, no difficulties.
Superb views. Lots of people at the start and finish but less crowded on the other side of the 3 Cime.
