From Sare, climb up to the Col de Lizarrieta via the D306 and park in the large car park.
(S/E) Return to the D306 and drive back down it for about 500 metres until it makes a hairpin bend to the right.
(1) At the entrance to the hairpin bend, turn left onto a path marked by a yellow sign. This path, which is initially level, passes through oak trees and then begins to descend, crossing several streams. You can see the pointed summit of Pena Plata (Atxuria in Basque) to the east.
The yellow markings, which are discreet at first, become more prominent. About 25 minutes after setting off, cross a ruined sheepfold: from here, there is a magnificent view of the valley and the first peaks.
The path climbs to the left and, 100 metres further on, passes under two beautiful oak trees, continues horizontally before descending again, soon descending into the scree and then resuming a pleasant walk. You will arrive at a renovated sheepfold.
(2) Take the gravel track that starts behind the building. La Rhune is opposite, with its red and white antenna at the summit.
(3) About 300m further on, continue along the track (ignore the yellow markings that descend to the right along a path).
(4) Further down, just before a large bend to the right, take a path on the left that goes uphill, marked "Ibanteli" by a yellow sign.
After about 100 metres, at the three-way junction, turn left. Pass by a first pidgeon hunting hut, then by an unusual block of two puddingstones placed one on top of the other. Further on, on a flat section, the path runs alongside a rockfall, then climbs to the edge of the forest. The summit of Ibanteli is on the left. The slope becomes steeper.
(5) Arrive at the pass marked with boundary marker R39 and a yellow signpost. As indicated, climb eastwards to reach a first small summit (marker R40). Continue straight ahead to reach the summit of Ibanteli.
(6) From this summit, descend southwards along small sheep tracks to reach a small pass. Go around the small rock wall, about ten metres high, on the left. Descend along the same type of path towards the south-west, heading for the car park at the start, which is clearly visible, and reach one of the marked paths that descend to it.
(7) Follow it to the left to the Venta, which marks the border (S/E).
