Parking at Lautenbach station. Identical markings throughout the hike: yellow diamond + green sign indicating "Lautenbacher Teufelsteig".
(S/E) With your back to the car park, head left towards the Neuensteinhalle. Walk past it and cross the small bridge. After the bridge, follow the path that branches off to the left next to the football pitches. Further on, pass under the Renchbrücke bridge. At the intersection, keep left to follow the path that runs alongside the forest and continue to a three-way junction. Turn right and walk for about 20 metres.
(1) Follow the path on the right that goes up into the forest. You will come to a T-junction; turn left and continue for about 50 metres.
(2) Look for the return path on the right and continue straight ahead. Further on, turn right, ignoring the path on the left, and continue to reach the Ameisenhütte higher up.
(3) Continue straight ahead on the forest road. Then stay on the same path, which makes several wide bends, ignoring the various paths branching off on either side.
(4) Leave the forest road and follow the path that climbs to the right towards the Neuenstein ruins. You will come to a wider path where you can turn right to the Neuenstein ruins, of which little remains but which offer a beautiful view.
(5) Turn around and continue straight ahead on the path. You will come to a four-way crossroads.
(6) Take the path on the left that climbs up to the Schaertenkopfhütte.
(7) When you reach the Schaertenkopfhütte, follow the path that branches off to the left at the bend and continues to climb towards Otschenfeld. Keep to the right at each intersection until you reach a plateau, Otschenfeld, where you can stop for a picnic.
(8) At the picnic table, take the path that descends to the right and leads to the Teuffelsschuppen: here you can buy cold drinks (self-service with a cash box) and enjoy them while admiring the landscape. Continue downhill, following the path that branches off to the left behind the drinks hut and joins the road.
(9) Immediately take the path that branches off to the right and descends towards the Rehaghütte.
(10) At this point, follow the path on the right which leads a few dozen metres further on to the Rehaghütte, where you can picnic or rest. Return to the path you left earlier, follow it to the right for about a hundred metres, then take the path that descends to the left. Cut across a forest track and continue straight ahead to the road. Be careful on the descent, which is quite steep! Follow the road to the right to Benny's Ranch. Here you can admire the ranch animals: horses, camels, llamas, goats, cows, etc.
(11) After Benny's Ranch, follow the path that climbs to the right into the forest to reach a wider path that you follow to the left , offering beautiful views here and there. Be sure to stay on the marked path, which first heads north then northeast and crosses several intersections.
(12) Turn left and follow the path that curves to the right before joining the path you started on.
(2) Turn left. Ignore the path on the right that you took on the way up and continue straight ahead. At the T-junction, turn right, cross the bridge and then turn right again to return to the car park at Lautenbach station (S/E).
