The Sentier des Merveilles (Path of Wonders) in Ottrot

Sculptures on tree stumps, a mystical place surrounded by a curious pagan wall, impressive granite cliffs. A short walk that will enchant you in any season, but is even more wonderful when there is snow.

Description of the walk

The tour departs from the Mont Sainte-Odile car park.

(S/E) Head towards the abbey and, before entering the site, look for a staircase on the left.

(1) Turn left to go down the stairs. Cut across a path and continue straight ahead for about 20 metres.

(2) Take the path that descends to the right into the forest. After passing through the Roman Gate, you will reach a crossroads where several paths converge.

(3) Take the Sentier du Mur Païen trail, which follows the wall. Follow the yellow signposts that lead to the right below another trail. Ignore the Sentier des Pèlerins trail on the right, which leads back downhill.

(4) A staircase leads to the Sentier des Merveilles, which runs alongside the Mur Païen. You will reach a fork in the path.

(5) Continue straight ahead on the blue signposted path, ignoring the path that goes up to the left. Continue to the next intersection.

(6) Turn left, following the same markings. Go to the end of the Hexenplatz and join the GR® trail, which leads directly to Mont Sainte-Odile: marked with a red rectangle crossed out in white.

(7) Turn left to follow it, leaving the access to the Elsberg hut on your right. Continue straight ahead, following the GR® markings, until you reach a large star-shaped crossroads.

(8) Leave the GR® and take the path marked with yellow horseshoes, which will take you along the Mur Païen on the way back to the abbey.

(9) Before reaching the fountain, turn left towards the large meadow, following the yellow cross markings, which will take you back to the large staircase at the start.

(2) Climb these steps to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Starting point at the Mont Saint-Odile Abbey car park. Spaces are limited but there are other car parks nearby. Very busy at weekends. In winter, the large meadow below the abbey is used as a sledding area.

Worth a visit

(S/E) Visit to the abbey, restaurant in the abbey, view from the terrace, Stations of the Cross.

We always enjoy doing this route again. Do, however, take care on certain sections that require extra attention. At point 7, we extended our route to the Elsberg kiosk to enjoy the lovely view and have a picnic.

A very beautiful route, fairly easy, ideal for getting back into shape and preparing for the new hiking season after several months of inactivity.
