From Mont Sainte-Odile to Niedermunster Abbey and back

A descent followed by an ascent linking two iconic sites: the Mont Sainte-Odile sanctuary and Niedermunster Abbey, a beautiful site with stunning views and a lovely chapel. A journey into the history of Saint Odile. Saint Odile founded the convent at the very top of the mountain; less well known is the fact that she also founded a second convent, further down the slope, which included a hospice to accommodate pilgrims unable to climb the steep path.

Description of the walk

(S/E) The hike starts in front of the Mont Sainte-Odile sanctuary. With your back to the entrance, take the steps on your left. At the bottom of the steps, take the paved path still to the left for about a hundred metres. Then turn right onto the wide, well-maintained path that descends towards the Fontaine de Sainte-Odile (Blue Cross).

(1) Once you reach the fountain, cross the road, go right for a few metres, then turn immediately left onto the Blue Cross path which runs beneath the retaining wall. Continue for 200 to 300 metres.

(2) Take the Yellow Triangle path which descends to the right and leads you to Niedermunster Abbey and its beautiful valley.

(3) Very soon, you’ll come out onto a road which you must cross; head slightly left, then quickly right, still following the Yellow Triangle towards the abbey. Continue straight on at the junction, then turn left twice onto wide tracks

(4) Once you reach Niedermunster Abbey, take the time to have a look around. There are several information boards. Walk round the bottom of the abbey and head up to the left to pass above the chapel, or walk round the top of the abbey. You’ll have a lovely view of the plain. Continue across the meadow.

(5) At the crossroads in the forest, you’ll come out onto the Blue Cross trail which climbs towards Mont Saint-Odile. Take the Blue Cross marked trail to the left as far as the Mont Sainte-Odile monastery. Continue straight on at the junction with the Yellow Triangle, then cut across a track before turning left at the next one.

(6) Stay on the Blue Cross marked trail by turning right and rejoin the original route.

(2) Return to the starting point by following the same route back. The route ends at the entrance to the monastery after climbing the steps (S/E).

A weekday hike, so naturally there were fewer hikers.
But I was very happy with it.
