The Lady of the Wolves Trail

South of Audruicq, discover Brédenarde, a land of hedgerows, hedges and fruit trees.
Starting from Zutkerque or Polincove, take the Dame aux Loups trail, named in honour of Baroness
de Draëck. You can admire her castle, the first hills of Artois and follow the winding course of the Hem, the river of mills.

Description of the walk

Parking is available at Place de la Mairie in Zutkerque.

(S/E) Opposite the starting sign, take the street on the right, opposite the church. At the intersection of the two departmental roads, turn right towards Polincove.
Leave the D226E on your left and take the small road opposite, Rue de l'Hermitage. Continue straight ahead for about 100 metres and take thefirst dirt track on the left, which leads to the ruins of the Leclerc Chapel.

(1) In front of the ruins, take the path on the right. At the end of this path, you will find Rue de l'Hermitage. Turn left and walk alongside the Château de la Baronne de Draëck.

(2) Take the small road behind the castle porch. It leads to the crossroads with Rue de Recques. Cross the street to the left to reach the dirt road. When you reach the D226, turn left towards La Grasse Payelle.

(3) At the central crossroads, take the street on the left, Rue Vrolant. It continues along a path. Then, at the crossroads, turn left until you reach the Petit Plouy farm.

(4) After passing the farm, turn left onto the tarmac road and enjoy the view of the bell tower of Polincove church. After a few metres, take the dirt track on the right, then right again at the next crossroads. There is a shortcut option, see Practical Information.

(5) At the intersection of the paths, turn right. Cross the D218 and Polincove church square, where you can take a break for a picnic by the water.
Then continue along Rue du Moulin to the Moulin Bleu fishing pond.

(6) At the Moulin Bleu, turn left and follow the Hem, then cross the footbridge and continue straight ahead. Cross the bridge and turn left onto the path that runs alongside the Tiret watergang.

(7) Cross the Tiret, then head right along the riverbank. At the crossroads, turn left and follow the D219. Be careful to stay on the hard shoulder.

(8) Before the 'Polincove' town sign, take the path on the right, then the road on the left. At the crossroads, rejoin the D219 and continue straight ahead until you reach the bridge over the Hem.

(9) Cross the bridge and turn right onto the road that runs alongside the river, pass an old drying shed, then turn left onto Impasse de l'École. Turn left there and follow the riverbank to the bridge near Fort Saint-Jean.

(10) At Fort St-Jean, turn left onto the D218, then immediately take the small road on the right. Cross the D219 and take the dirt road opposite, which joins the D219E1 at the hamlet of Blanc Pignon.

(11) Turn right and follow the D219E1 for about 200 metres. Don't miss the path on the left between two properties; take it, heading south-west.

(12) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead, still heading south-west. At the next crossroads, turn left then right to reach the ruins of the Chapelle Leclerc.

(1) Turn right onto the path you took on the way there and return to Place de la Mairie (S/E).

Worth a visit

St Martin's Church in Zutkerque
Built in the 19th century, St Martin's Church is characterised by its Renaissance-style tower, the only remnant of the pre-Revolution church. Inside is a magnificent carved wooden pulpit dating from the 17th century.

Château de la Baronne de Draëck
This 18th-century castle was the home of the Lady of the Wolves. Feel free to walk through the porch to admire the façade of this residence. Please remember that you are on private property.

St-Léger Church in Polincove
With its crenellated bell tower, St-Léger Church, built in the 19th century, is nestled in the Hem Valley. Feel free to push open the doors to discover, among other things, a painting depicting the life of St-Léger.

Moulin Bleu
This 19th-century mill used the energy of the Hem river to produce flour. Out of service since 1958, it is now a popular spot for many fishermen.

Old drying shed
In the 20th century, chicory cultivation was a way of life in our countryside. After harvesting, the chicory roots were dried in large yellow or red brick buildings called drying rooms. Don't miss the Chicory Festival, held everythird weekend in October.

Very beautiful sections along the Hem, but overall fairly flat terrain.
The route offers little shelter. I recommend the 767 at the finish line.

A 14 km trail that can be completed in 3 hours at your own pace.
Perfect for beginners. Not much walking on the road, with pretty sections along the river. The only downside is that there is very little shade on the trail, so bring sunscreen and a hat
At the end of the trail, there is a very nice bar called Le 767, named after the story of the lady with the wolves.

Take 3 hours at a good pace.

Very pretty, alternating between roads, paths and the banks of the Hem.

Very pleasant, highly recommended for those who enjoy flat routes.

Well-marked route.
One small drawback: not much shade.
Best done in spring.

I really enjoyed this hike, even though it rained part of the way. The signage is excellent and the route has the advantage of varying types of paths (grass across fields, tarmac, dirt tracks, etc.). The village of Polincove, crossed by the Hem river, is interesting, particularly its church. In short, I didn't notice the time passing and I completed the 14 km quite easily.

I did it in reverse, starting from Polincove. So with a slight variation.
It would be helpful to have a sign when you take the path opposite the car park of Polincove church.
Otherwise, you can easily find the signposts at the next crossroads.

Very beautiful route. Very well signposted. Beautiful views.
Please note that in winter, some sections are very, very muddy; however, they are passable if you are well equipped.

Flat, rural route, with sections through fields on muddy dirt tracks, disappointing, but pleasant views along part of the route (Polincove church, Recques woods) in good weather.

Best done in dry weather, preferably in spring (outside the ploughing or harvesting season for cereals and other crops)!

A very pleasant hike after lockdown with varied landscapes: greenery (meadows, pastures, wooded paths), water (with the HEM and watergangs),
