Description of the walk

Departure from the hamlet of Le Pinet, located south of Chamalières-sur-Loire, between this village and Blanlhac, on the D35.
If you have difficulty parking at the entrance to the village, you can change your starting point and begin the hike in Varenne, where it will be easier to find parking.

(S/E) Begin the hike by following the road that leads away from the hamlet towards the south-east. Leave this road after 300 metres and take the path on the right, now marked in red and white (GR®3).
After 800 metres, when you reach Le Mazer, leave the small road on the right and take the one on the left. At the exit of the hamlet, take the well-marked track that goes up into the woods on the right (still marked red and white). You will reach a crossroads with severalGR® trails (marked with a cross).

(1) Turn right towards Chomeil, which you will reach after 300 metres.

(2) Then take the path on the right (marked red and white), above the only house on the right. 100 metres further on, you will see some signposts: leave theGR® which climbs up the hillside on the left and follow the signs for "Knoll de Barthou, Rocher de Costaros", marked in yellow. You will reach a crossroads after climbing for about 500 metres.

(3) Take the path on the right (signposted: Rocher de Costaros). After reaching the top of the rock, turn around and go back down to the crossroads.

(3) Then follow the path marked "Knoll de Barthou". At the top of the knoll, follow the signs for "Varenne" to descend westwards (yellow markings). 200 metres further down, at the crossroads, turn left.

(4) At the crossroads, take the path on the right marked red-white and yellow. 100 metres further on, continue on the left and you will reach the entrance to the hamlet of Aunas.

(5) Take the road on the right. At the bottom of the hamlet, at the fork, continue downhill to the left, following the red-white and yellow markings.
300 metres further on, at a place called Sarailler, cross the road and continue straight on for 100 metres to reach a place called Suquerot.

(6) Turn onto the track on the right (yellow markings) and follow it for 700 metres. You will arrive at a place called Recoule.

(7) Take the hairpin bend to the right to join the road heading south (no more markings). At the crossroads 400 metres upstream, turn onto the road on the left to descend to Le Pinet, 1.1 km away, and return to the car park (S/E).

2/ There are severalGR® trails in the area:GR®3and its variants,GR®40, which intersect, so pay attention to the description before reaching a crossroads.
A short route but with a slightly steep climb, particularly between the (3) and the summit of Knoll de Barthou.
Good walking shoes are recommended.
This hike is not recommended in the event of heavy snowfall or frozen snow.

Not a single hiker today despite the superb weather. Start from the hamlet of Le Pinet, which is well signposted.
On the climb up Castaros Rock and the knoll of Barthou, caution is advised, especially in rainy weather.
Beautiful views to enjoy or revisit.

Pleasant in good weather... with a steep path that is best taken on the way up; it would even be dangerous to take it on the way down.

Route starting from a place called Chamboulive, covering 9.5 km with an elevation gain of 520 m. We also did it in reverse with my grandchildren (aged 11 to 8).
Beautiful weather, superb views, a very nice outing lasting 3½ hours.
Highly recommended.

As stated in the description, there isn't much parking space in the hamlet of Le Pinet. So we went to the car park indicated in the hamlet of Varenne and started the route straight away at the Costaros rock in beautiful weather. A very beautiful site with a fairly steep climb but on a well-maintained and charming path through the pine trees. We didn't go to the top of the rock (it looks quite accessible). The view from the top of Knoll de Barthou alone is worth the walk. The panorama in the northern sector is not bad either.

A very beautiful short hike with a magnificent view at the summit (be careful not to take the first fork, "rocher de costaros," which leads to the climbing routes!).

Statistics: Family: 7.2 km / 2 hours of walking, 30 minutes of stopping, 463 m cumulative elevation gain
It's an easy walk even though it's uphill. Be careful near the rocks, don't miss the sign explaining the peregrine falcon, climb to the left, and don't go rock climbing (we saw some "hikers" attempting the ladder!).
Very pretty views, interesting route in winter for the sunny part.

A short route not far from my home, which I didn't know about, but which turned out to be superb: a lovely, well-maintained path with beautiful views... highly recommended!

Being from the area, I didn't know anything about Rocher de Costaros and I must admit that this hike is very good.
For February, an open route is interesting because the sun warms you up and your eyes are treated to beautiful views. At point 1, the view of Mézenc is superb, then between points 2 and 3, it's like a balcony with a magnificent view below. The highlight is Rocher de Costaros, which offers an almost 360° view!
I learned that climbing is prohibited (sign at the foot of the rock) because it is the breeding season for peregrine falcons.
After that, there is a bit of road, but we only saw one or two cars.
This time, the time given is "normal" for a walk at a "leisurely" pace.
