The Devil’s Bridge from Bor-et-Bar

A short walk offering magnificent views of a little-visited part of the Viaur Valley. The path provides access, via a 100-metre detour, to the remains of the ancient Pont du Diable, which was swept away by a flood in 1786.

Description of the walk

Starting point: the picnic table above Laurélie.

(S/E) Set off towards Lasbinals; after 200 m, turn right onto the stony path that descends to the Viaur, leading to the old Moulin de la Souleyrie.

(1) Turn right and follow the right bank of the Viaur.
After a few hundred metres, the path leaves the riverbank and climbs gently to the right.

(2) After about one kilometre, you’ll reach a fork in the path.
From there, you can explore the small path on the left (marked on the map by the red arrow), which will take you to the site of the old Pont du Diable.
Return to the fork and continue uphill to the road.
Follow this road to the left, passing below La Joulinie, until you reach Muret.

(3) About 100 metres after Muret, take the path that veers right for 100 metres,
Then take the path on the left for 50 metres.
Then turn right and follow the path between the walls.

(4) Pass through the old hamlet of L’Albarie.
Follow the path back to the starting point (S/E).

The path is well signposted (in the direction described above) with yellow signs bearing the number 7.
A leaflet, available from the Town Hall, details other walks in Bor-et-Bar which can be combined to extend your visit.

Worth a visit

Beyond L’Albarie, to the right on the plateau, lies a mysterious site of walls and clusters of stones known locally as ‘the Gallic village’. Its origins remain unknown despite visits by several groups of archaeologists and other specialists.

A nice little route in the cool air of Digne – just like in *'A River Runs Through It'*

We went on this walk as a family with children aged 6 and 10. Whilst it’s quite pleasant (you walk along the banks of the Viaur), it’s not particularly interesting apart from being a family walk. We took a detour via the Devil’s Bridge, which is rather misnamed; there’s not much point in going out of your way if you’re in a hurry.
Make sure the children wear long trousers – there are a few brambles that will tickle their legs.

The route begins with a long descent, leading to the banks of the Viaur – the only pleasant part of the walk. The walk takes place entirely through woodland. There are no views to speak of, just a succession of ascents and descents. According to my GPS, the total elevation gain is 270 metres.

We went on this walk as a family with our 3-year-old daughter.
She only walked half the way, but we’d brought the child carrier with us.
The walk is interesting; unfortunately, we didn’t take the detour to the Pont du Diable so as not to be late for the curfew.

The yellow markings are clearly visible throughout; the only tricky bit was after point 4, in the hamlet of L’Albarie: you have to follow the path straight on, passing very close to a house (it really feels as though you’re walking through people’s gardens).
We hesitated because of this and tried in vain to go round it, before giving it a go and realising that this was indeed the path.
The section along the Viaur involved stepping over a few ‘mini-streams’, and the riverbank was sometimes a bit tricky with a child (roots, rocks). The rest was very easy to walk on.
