When you reach Villefranche-de-Conflent via the D66, continue right at the roundabout, follow the fortifications and, in a right-hand bend, before the Train Jaune railway line, turn left onto the D6 towards Sahorre. Pass through the three hamlets of Fulla, then the hamlet of Sahorre, cross Py carefully and continue on to the Coll de Mentet, much higher up. Park in the car park.
Yellow markings. There are no GR®T77 markings
(S/E). Leave the road and the track on your left. Climb up the pasture opposite. There is a steel post in the middle of the path at the start. Climb south, south-east towards the forest. Continue along the degraded track, which eventually becomes a damaged path. Pass through a fence and continue climbing. Pass a first spring on the right and arrive at a second one. Continue climbing and come out onto a pasture at the edge of the forest.
(1) A few metres further on, there is a beautiful view of the French-Spanish ridges in the distance.
Continue climbing, to the left, due east, through a gap in the forest. Higher up, after a wide curve to the right, to the south, you will come to another pasture, where a signpost (altitude 2,200 m) on the left of the path, against the rocks, indicates: Pla Segala. Follow the direction of Portella de Rotjà (2 hours).
End of the yellow markings. A few cairns at the beginning
(2) Continue climbing less steeply, heading south. Further on, climb more steeply towards the clearly visible peaks. Enjoy the beautiful 360° views. There are many places to stop and rest.
(3) Pile of rocks on the left with a beautiful view of Les Esquerdes and La Portelle de Rojtà. A lovely spot for a break. Continue climbing, keeping to the right of the fence. Further up, the fence veers to the left (altitude 2,385 m).
No markings or cairns
(4) Two options:
- In case of bad weather (fog, rain), continue straight ahead, heading south, to the junction on the Mort de l'Escolà plateau. Directional signpost. Then turn left, east, onto the GRP® to the hut.
- Otherwise, follow this trail, veering left along the fence on your left, until it reaches the cliff.
(5) Turn right and climb a few metres up a narrow passage in the rocks to reach the ridge (Mort de l'Escolà when zooming in on IGN).
Turn left and follow a small ridge path. When it disappears, descend to the right into the pasture, and the hut will soon appear. Cross the GRP® and continue downhill to reach the Cabane de Rotjà (observation on 5 October 2025: hut clean and windows restored, strong wind and frost at 11:30 a.m.). Please keep this hut clean, as it is very useful in this very cold location. Close the door properly and block it with a stone. Thank you. Very beautiful location with a view of Pic de Costabona, Coll del Pal, etc.
Yellow and red markings Tour of the Nature Reserves
(6) Option of a short return trip to Portella de la Rojà to see another view.
Above the hut, look for the GRP® markings you saw earlier. Follow this excellent path along the mountainside, below the ridge you followed on the way up, and you will reach the Mort de l'Escolà crossroads. There is a signpost here (often destroyed). Take note of this desert-like area with no vegetation; it is easy to imagine the climatic conditions here.
Large cairns are present at the beginning. There are no GR®T77 markings
(7). Turn right, heading due north, following the large cairns. Reach the bend in the fence you passed on the way up.
(4) Continue, keeping to the left of the fence in the opposite direction to the outward journey.
Yellow markings. There are no GR®T77 markings
(2) Remember to turn left, west, and find the signpost on the right against the rocks and the yellow markings. Reach the car park much further down (S/E).
You can visit the charming hamlet of Mantet either by taking the GR®10 trail there and back, or by car (brasserie open in summer).
