A loop of the Pic du Guajara

In the Teide National Park, this hike takes you up to a superb summit which offers splendid views of Teide on one side, and the south coast of Tenerife on the other.
The route is very well marked, with signs at every crossroads. It's virtually impossible to get lost.
⚠️Please note the hunting season in the Park. See Practical Information. Updated October 21, 2022.

Description of the walk

Start: Start from the parking lot below the restaurant, next to an information hut.

(S/E) Take path no. 4 until you reach a dirt track (PR®-TF-86).

(1) Cross the track and continue straight ahead (information sign) on trail no. 31. Climb up to the ridge.

(2) At the junction with trail no. 15, leave trail no. 31 and turn left onto trail no. 15. This rises on the side of the Guajara, then passes between two cliffs to reach the plateau. Continue on a gentler slope to the next junction.

(3) Climb to the left and reach the summit of Pic du Guajara.

(4) After enjoying the superb 360° view of Teide National Park, return to the previous junction.

(3) Continue left along trail no. 15 and reach a fork in the road.

(5) To bypass the Guajara to the east, follow trail no. 15 to the left and continue along the flank until you reach a small pass and a junction with trail no. 5.

(6) Leave trail no. 15 and turn left onto no. 5, which descends towards the Teide enclosure. Join a track (trail no. 4).

(7) Continue along this track until you reach the junction with the path you have already taken.

(1) Turn right onto path no. 4 and follow the opposite route to the parking lot (S/E).

Notes

Start: Start from the parking lot below the restaurant, next to an information hut.

⚠️Important: restricted access to a few hikes in the Park.
Teide Park is closed to most hikes every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, until 2pm on the south side of the park and until 5pm on the north side. We were there on Monday October 17. Signs forbid access. Hunting for mouflons was generally open throughout October, and at the end of June/beginning of July.

This itinerary is an update of the hike, written by trotnatu, which takes a path that is forbidden by the national park.

Gears: We were quite hot at the start of the hike (in a T-shirt at 13°C with no wind). However, during the hike, we were accompanied by a very cold (not to say icy) wind. A windbreaker is a must, at least at the summit, if you don't want to end up freezing.

At the summit, you'll find some kind of stone enclosures to protect you from the wind and keep you warm when you eat.

Note: It took us 1 h 20 to go up and 1 h 45 to come down. We consider ourselves good walkers. A group we met at the start of the hike took 2 h to go up.
Count on 4 h or even 4 h 30 without a break, depending on your physical condition.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

We did the circular hike in reverse so we could tackle the steep section on the way up, as the snow was partially frozen in places. There was quite a lot of snow, so it was tough going, but we were truly treated to some stunning views from numerous vantage points and a wide variety of landscapes. A truly magnificent hike.

It wasn’t too busy, as we set off early, and we can’t recommend doing the same highly enough, as the car park fills up quickly.
Otherwise, it’s an easy and superb walk.

A very beautiful hike with no particular difficulties. Beautiful scenery, and at the end, it feels like you're in Arizona. Of course, you should arrive by 9am at the latest, as the car park fills up quickly. The descent is relatively gentle.

A beautiful hike with a magnificent view of Mount Teide. Be careful, even in April, don't arrive late as the car park fills up very quickly. We arrived at 9am and there was room, but only just! Lots of signs, impossible to get lost on the way. Beautiful view from the top of the Guajara.

THE hike not to be missed in the Teide massif. Magnificent scenery and cultural highlights at the summit. Make sure you do the circuit in this direction.

A few problems finding a parking space according to the departure time and a bit of a crowd around the car parks as there are several walking routes available here.
A very nice walk with beautiful views and no major difficulties.
Be careful on the north-facing slopes, as there may still be snow on some parts of the path, which can be slippery.

Magnificent walk started at 09:00 in the morning with a temperature of 2 degrees. No wind. Ent so very pleasant. As soon as we passed the north side, we were warmly welcomed by the sun.
Allow 1:30 for the ascent and the descent.
descent.

Very different landscapes throughout the hike, with superb views of the volcano.

The reward at the top: extraordinary views of the Teide peak and the Las Cañadas caldera.

Setting off early in the morning means you can do part of the climb in the shade.
It's easy to follow the route using the app.

We did this walk a few days ago.
It's easy to get to the parador car park by car. But it's better to arrive early for two reasons: later in the day there are no parking spaces and later in the day the heat can be a real inconvenience.
The route is very well signposted and easy to follow, with no technical difficulties. The scenery is varied and magnificent. We loved it! And it's easier than going up to Teide via Montana Blanca or Pico Viejo. The main difficulty with Teide is the altitude, and you shouldn't attempt it in July/August. It's too hot.

A very interesting hike, with majestic and varied landscapes. We climbed Guajara on 28 July, but to avoid the heat we started walking at 7am and did the whole climb in the shade. As we gained altitude, we gradually came into view of the other islands in the archipelago: la Palma, la Gomera, el Hiero and Gran Canaria. When you reach the summit, the view of the Teide peak is truly breathtaking, and of great beauty.

Quite a physical hike, but a must! Magnificent scenery! Be careful, not much shade on the trail. Done in 4h30 with photo breaks

Magnificent walk. I find it more beautiful to see Teide from this viewpoint than from the cable car.
Not much shade, so bring a hat and water. Beware of high-altitude hiking conditions, which can affect your physical condition.
