A lovely little circular walk along the Seine, between Le Pecq and Bougival.

Description of the walk

Park in the free car park on Quai Maurice Berteaux, in Le Pecq.

(S/E) Head north to cross the Seine via the Georges Pompidou Bridge.

(1) Turn right immediately after the bridge, onto Quai de l'Orme de Sully and then Boulevard de la Libération. Follow the right bank of the Seine, following theGR®2route.

(2) Leave Rue Max Gauffreteau on your left and continue straight ahead along the towpath. Walk alongside the Seine on your right and the water treatment facilities on your left for a good while.

(3) The towpath continues along Quai de l'Écluse. As you pass, note the very exclusive British School of Paris, a little corner of England in Croissy. Finally, pass under the Pont du Maréchal Delattre de Tassigny.

(4) About twenty metres after the bridge, turn left into the park. Walk straight through the park, then turn left to join the road leading to the bridge, near a roundabout. Then turn immediately left onto Rue des Ponts. Cross the Seine in two stages, passing over the Île de la Chaussée.

(5) At the end of the bridge, go down the steps on the right. Walk along the Seine with it on your right and the D113 on your left (a noisy stretch due to traffic).

(6) About 900m after the bridge, you’ll reach the site of the Marly Pumping Station, which supplied water to the Palace of Versailles (see the photo and the “During the walk” section for a bit of history). Continue along the Seine.

(7) After passing the "Buffallo Grill" restaurant, take the towpath on the right (you’ll immediately appreciate the peace and quiet). Follow this path to Les Pyramides (the tennis temple) and cross a car park.

(8) Continue along a tarmac “road” beside the Seine, which leads back to the starting car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

The Marly Pumping Station was used to supply water to the gardens of the Palace of Versailles. Inaugurated in 1684, the station consisted of 14 wheels, each 12 metres in diameter, which drove over 250 pumps at various levels.

The water was raised in three stages: from the Seine to a first reservoir, then to a second, and finally to the Louveciennes aqueduct, from where it flowed to the reservoirs at Marly and Louveciennes.

It then reached the Regard du Jongleur, from where, depending on requirements, it was sent either to Versailles or to Marly.

Of this hydraulic complex, the following remain: the Marly reservoirs, the Regard du Jongleur, the Louveciennes aqueduct, the Charles X building, the water conduit on the Bougival hillside, underground pipes and hydraulic remains in Marly Park.

This site is generally open to the public during Heritage Days.
You can also visit the Marly-le-Roi/Louveciennes walking museum.

Just like the other reviews I should have read before going there...

Part 1, fine; Part 2, along a very busy main road, very disappointing due to the noise and pollution...

Fortunately, it’s dotted with reproductions of paintings, and you can catch a glimpse of the ‘remnants’ of the Marly machine. Otherwise, of no interest to hikers

A pleasant but unremarkable walk up to the Croissy Bridge, after which it becomes downright tedious, with a noisy, uninteresting thoroughfare once you reach the other side. You might as well carry on straight along the first bank of the Seine, or perhaps plan a route that includes the islands in the Seine.

At point 4, you can continue through Croissy without crossing the road; there are many beautiful houses here, and after about 2 km, you’ll find the La Verrière restaurant with a lovely terrace where you can have a cup of tea, next to the Grenouillère Museum and Saint-Léonard Chapel.
The stretch between points 5 and 7 is rather tedious, despite the Impressionist paintings. There is no longer a Buffalo Grill at point 7, but you can clearly see the towpath branching off to the right alongside a Total petrol station.

The first part on the Croissy-sur-Seine side is pleasant, although the riverbanks need clearing so you can actually see the Seine. The second part, on the other side of the bridge, is completely uninteresting as you have to walk along the main road.
I don’t think I’d do this walk again...

I was very pleasantly surprised by this walk along the Seine.
A lovely, peaceful setting where the greenery and beauty of the landscape are very soothing.
When we reached the site of the Marly Pumping Station, we turned back to enjoy the walk again.
We plan to come back to visit the islands.

It’s true that part of the journey back is unpleasant: noise, dirt.
The description suggests that this stretch isn’t long. That’s not accurate; it seems to go on forever.
However, the scenes of local artists at work and the homes on the barges with their little gardens more than make up for this unpleasant aspect.

The return leg, along the busy road, isn’t very interesting. I’m thinking of doing a round trip next time instead, taking a route around the small islands and thus avoiding that walk along the main road. I started my walk from the Corbières Park, which is on the road to Mesnil-le-Roi, to make it a bit longer.
