Description of the walk

Park in front of Saint-Vincent Church in Marcq-en-Barœul.

(S/E) Head south-west towards Le Nautic bar and continue along Rue Gabriel Péri. Then turn left onto Rue Faidherbe. Cross Rue du Quai on the right-hand side and continue along Rue Faidherbe.

(1) Once you reach the banks of the Marque (Roubaix Canal), there are two options:
- continue along the street (option marked on the map);
- follow the footpath as close as possible to the canal.
Whichever option you choose, at the end, turn right and take the footbridge over the canal. This will take you onto the Roubaix Canal Greenway.

(2) Take the greenway on the right. Follow the canal, passing a weir. Further on, pass a factory and continue to a junction just before Rue Nationale.

(3) Turn left just before the bridge and cross the Centrakor car park. Then turn left onto Rue de la Briqueterie. Go straight on and follow the sports ground on your right.

(4) At the next junction, turn left into Rue de la Haute Loge. Keep following this street and ignore all the streets on the right. At the corner of the post office, turn left into Rue Raymond Derain.

(2) Cross the canal again via the footbridge. Continue straight ahead and follow Rue Raymond Derain to the end. Then turn onto Place du Général de Gaulle and head for the car park in front of Saint-Vincent Church (S/E).

A magnificent route; we saw lots of deer and other wildlife. A truly magical route in this autumn season

The walk isn’t really very pleasant on this side of the canal: you pass two factories, one of which is huge (and smells really awful), and in the end you don’t walk along the water for very long, as the second part is on pavements and goes on for quite a while
Instead of turning right after the footbridge, it’s better to go left – it’s much nicer…

We’re keen walkers; we wanted to go for a short stroll, but as we didn’t have much time, we quickly looked at what was available nearby and settled on this route. We were very disappointed. The outward leg follows the Marque along a clean limestone path, but there’s nothing of interest to see – just factories, abandoned allotments and so on. The return leg is even worse: uninteresting streets and traffic. I don’t understand how such routes can be featured on this site; it needs to be removed.

The church square and the canal bank are really lovely. But the one downside to this walk is the factory... It’s noisy and smelly during the walk... It spoils the enjoyment.

At first, the setting is lovely. The canal banks are very busy. The stretch past the big factory is a bit dreary, but it’s very short. We did a round trip. It was much nicer than being in the city.

Thank you very much, Olivier, for these suggestions regarding detours; it’s a brilliant idea, and I’ll make the change as soon as possible

I’m really disappointed with this walk.
I have nothing against urban walks provided they are picturesque or cultural, but here we’re walking through an ugly, noisy suburban area: we walk alongside a factory with an unpleasant smell for a long time, then cross a shopping centre and finally return along a very busy street.
On the way back, rather than staying on the busy road, I suggest cutting across the grassy area in the heart of the Hautes Loges neighbourhood. There’s no marked path, but if you stick to the grass and head north-east, you can’t go wrong.
I’d like to point out to anyone wishing to walk along the banks of the Marque that the sections further upstream are much more pleasant (except for the sections under the motorways, which should be avoided), with the best stretch being between Bouvines and Chéreng.
