Le Gué Verdon

At the start, quiet country lanes with panoramic views of Fontenay-le-Comte and the surrounding countryside; then, after passing through the village of Meilleraie, shaded paths and tracks running alongside the Vendée river not far from the Albert dam, before climbing up to Saint-Michel-le-Cloucq.

Description of the walk

Park on Rue de l’Église (dead-end road behind the church)

(S/E) With your back to the church, turn right at the first street (Rue de la Pompe).
After 50m, turn left onto the Sentier des Écoliers. This path branches off to the right then to the left to go round a property and joins Rue du Pavé. Cross over to take Rue de la Gravée opposite.

(1) At the cross, cross Rue de la Mairie and head towards Place de la Mairie, passing in front of the fountain.
Go round the square, passing the school, and turn left onto the Chemin des Moulins (shared section with the GR® de Pays de Mélusine).

(2) Leave the GRP® by turning right. At the next junction, head left. Join the D49 and cross carefully. Walk for about 100 m.

(3) Turn left and head up towards La Meilleraie, ignoring the roads on the left.

(4) Turn right at the Stop sign and immediately left onto Rue de la Grennerie. At the end of the street, continue to the left, take a right-hand bend, then left again, leaving the cul-de-sac on your right, and head towards the junction with the D104. Cross at the pedestrian crossing and take Rue de la Bitauderie opposite for about 150 m, then turn right after Impasse de la Bonnetrie. Join Rue du Colombier, follow it to the right until you reach the junction with Rue de la Fontaine. Cross over and continue straight ahead along the street opposite (Chemin de la Pavoterie). After about 50 m, at the end of the street, continue along the shaded path that continues from there.

(5) Here you will rejoin the GR® de Pays de Mélusine. Follow it to the left towards La Martrie. A little further on, ignore the path leading to the farm by turning right to join the Route de la Martrie.

(6) Turn left, cross the hamlet of La Martrie and continue straight on. Pass the sewage treatment plant and, about 200 m further on, you’ll reach another path. Turn right and immediately left onto a shaded path. Join and cross Rue de la Charoulière. Continue slightly to the left onto a new shaded path.

(7) Ignore the signposting and continue straight on to the D104, then turn right onto the footpath.

(8) At the roundabout, turn right again and further on join the path that continues through the forest below the embankment that hides the road.

(9) Cross the roadcarefully and follow the path which joins the small road; take this carefully tothe right for a few dozen metres. At the bend before reaching the main road, take the path that heads straight into the forest. Further on, cross the Vendée river via a large metal footbridge. Turn left after the footbridge and continue along this path through the forest. Ignore the path leading off to the right towards the quarry and continue down towards the river.

(10) Cross the ford via the footbridge and continue along this path. Ignore the path that branches off a little further down to the right and start the climb. At the top of the hill, leave the path leading to the Noubaud farm on your left and head for the next junction.

(11) Turn left and, a little further on, right, running alongside the sports ground. When you reach Rue du Clos (D104), turn right, walk past the cemetery, and head towards the church by taking Rue de l’Église to the left of the cross until you reach the car park (S/E).

The first part of this walk takes us across the plain; after passing through the village of La Meilleraie, we come to some lovely paths that lead us into the woods and along the banks of the River Vendée, which we cross several times via footbridges.

Up to kilometre 6, it’s mainly tarmac, with fields stretching as far as the eye can see or residential areas.
From point 8 onwards, the path runs alongside a fairly major road under construction (I think it’s an extension of the D 49, given the large roundabout at altitude 81 (between 7 & 8)), so much so that the path branching off to the left at point 9 is harder to find. Follow the GPS coordinates carefully. The section from 9 to 11 is the highlight of the walk.
After 11, a lovely little outdoor gym area is a welcome sight, following the steep climb that precedes it.
Clearly, the topography of the area has changed significantly since the route was first mapped out!

Thanks for the information. It seems there is a dispute with the owner of the Château de la Beaugisière. Furthermore, the Fontenay-le-Comte tourist office website states that the two footpaths, “Le Gué Verdon” and “Jean Dô Bois”, are closed because the footbridge is inaccessible. This is no doubt due to ongoing or planned works on a road bypassing St-Michel.

A lovely walk, with stunning views, beautiful forests and lovely paths.
Please note: at point 7, despite very clear signposting, do not turn right as you will not be able to ‘make a left-hand turn’; the path that runs through the forest and cuts across the driveway to Beaugisière Castle has been blocked by a mound of earth and a solid fence. To continue the walk, at point 7, we carried on straight ahead, despite the signposting, along a recently gravelled path which joins the D104, which we took on the right, and 250 m further on we joined the small road on the right towards La Frotterie, which rejoins the original route at point 8.
We had no other option but to bypass this blocked path.
We believe that the signposting and the route description should be reviewed soon.
This walk remains, nevertheless, very pleasant

A really good route; the description is accurate and the route itself is well-marked. A route well worth doing or doing again.
