Fox Glacier via Minnehaha Forest

The 13 km long Fox Glacier is unique in that it has an easily accessible terminal glacier tongue. It is exceptional at a latitude of 43°, corresponding to that of Marseille, to see a glacier at an altitude of only 400 m and 15 km from the sea. This phenomenon is due to the rainfall in this region, one of the highest in the world at around 5 m/year, resulting in heavy snowfall in the New Zealand Alps. However, today it is insufficient to stem the retreat of the glacier. These rains benefit the rainforest at its foot, where ferns, podocarps and other endemic species abound, overgrown with mosses and hanging vines reminiscent of the vegetation of the early ages.

Description of the walk

By car: take Route 6 along the west coast of the South Island to Fox Glacier and park in the car park on Cook Flat Road.

(S/E) Return to Route 6 and follow it to the right. At the end of the town, join the intersection with a trail on the left.

(1) Follow this trail marked Glacier Valley and Cycleway, Walkway, which enters the forest, to reach a fork 20 m further on.

(2) At the sign, leave the Te Weheka Walkway on your right, which you will return to later. Continue straight ahead on Minnehaha Walk along a path winding along a stream in lush vegetation that offers a striking view of virgin forest.

(3) At the intersection, rejoin the Te Weheka path. Ignore the right-hand fork and take the left-hand fork (south). Keep left as you approach the Fox River. Follow it and cross the old access road.

(4) Continue on the path opposite and cross a stream flowing into the river. Pass a car park and start climbing alongside the river.

(5) At the fork, climb the steep path on the left to reach the glacier viewpoint. The trail on the right approaches the glacier front.

(6) From the viewpoint, retrace your steps to point (3). Leave the previous Minnehaha Walk path on your right. Stay on the Te Weheka Walkway opposite and return to the car park (S/E).
