The path to the donkey pond

Off the beaten track, this route follows the bottom of a somewhat secluded valley and the edge of the Brotonne State Forest. It also offers a few surprising sights: a chapel in the heart of the countryside, a row of pollarded trees silhouetted against the light at the forest’s edge, and tall beech trees…

Description of the walk

Start from the car park at the church in La Haye-Aubrée.

Unmarked route

(S/E) From the car park, head towards the crossroads and turn into Rue de la Chapelle, passing a restaurant. Then ignore the dead-end at Chemin des Bois and turn left immediately to stay on Route de la Chapelle and visit the Notre-Dame de Lourdes Chapel at the end of the street.

(1) After a stop at the chapel (picnic table available), take the road 50 m to the right and immediately take the first path on the right, which follows the bottom of the valley between woods and meadows. At the end of this pretty dirt track, head up the small road on the right called Chemin de Robillard.

(2) At the top, turn left onto Route de la Bouilère and continue straight on. Then, at thesecond junction, turn left onto Rue Louis du Bosc to head back down into the valley.

(3) At the bottom, take the path on the right, Chemin des Carrières du Bocage, to follow the valley floor straight on for over 3 km.

(4) At the end of the path, take Route de la Boulière to the left for 100 m, then turn off onto the path on the right called Chemin du Val de Bourneville to head into the forest.

(5) In the clearing marking the entrance to the Brotonne State Forest, head up to the right following theGR®23. At the top, continue straight ahead along the forest track, still following the GR®.

(6) When the bends mark the start of the descent, leave theGR® and the lovely forest lane to head up to the right along the path in the shade of the conifers.

(7) At the end of the path, keep left to follow the edge of the forest straight ahead.

(8) Back on the tarmac, take the road to the right and leave the forest, passing in front of the Maison Forestière du Parquet. Continue straight on along Rue du Bois.

(9) Turn left onto Rue Martel to rejoin a path, then after 400 m, turn right.

(10) At the end of the cul-de-sac called Chemin des Comtes, turn right then immediately left onto Rue de l'Église, which takes you back to the church car park (S/E).

- "Relais du Petit Normand" restaurant at the crossroads in the village centre.
- Picnic table at the Notre-Dame de Lourdes Chapel.

Worth a visit

- The Brotonne State Forest lies entirely within the Seine-Maritime department, whilst the countryside you pass through is in the Eure department. This state forest is a vast, contiguous area of 4,000 hectares occupying the interior of a circular bend in the Seine, known as the Brotonne circular bend.

- Saint Léger Church in La Haye Aubrée: its wide nave with two aisles dates from the 16th century, whilst the massive square tower with its buttresses is older, having been built in the 13th century.

- The Chapel of Notre-Dame de Lourdes was built in 1871, no doubt in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for sparing the village during the 1870 war. It remains a place of active devotion. If you find the chapel open, you may say a prayer and leave a note.

A pleasant walk thanks to its somewhat ‘wild’ character, varied terrain and shaded sections. However, it’s best avoided after or during rain if the ground is wet. The route often runs along the edge of or through the woods. There are some fine trees.
There is a picnic table next to the chapel.
The paths in the valley are very grassy and uneven; some sections are more passable: make sure you’re well equipped. Brambles, ferns, bushes, etc. You move slowly along them; you have to watch where you step. A bit of clearing would still be necessary.
We didn’t come across anyone.

A lovely walk through the Normandy countryside and woodland.
Please note at the start: you must stay on Rue de la Chapelle until you reach the chapel itself, and not turn into the dead-end Chemin des Bois as indicated in the description.

A lovely, peaceful walk with very pleasant paths, particularly in the valley on the edge of the forest (Chemin des Carrières du Bocage...). No hunting for us on 1 November, no mud either, and the wild boars were well-behaved.
On the way back up to the plateau, we missed the left turn onto the GR 23 at the Londe forest house, no doubt because, to avoid the mud at the bottom of the path in the poplar grove, we took the parallel private track serving all the hunting posts, which was more passable. But no harm done; we easily caught up with the trail by turning left onto the road.
Thank you for this route.

Trails to avoid at this time of year. It’s hunting season. The wild boars have torn up the paths… it’s really tough going.
Otherwise, it’s a great walk to do in the summer, with plenty of undergrowth and then that path at the bottom of the valley, lost in the middle of nowhere.
