La Motte Castle and Remeneuil Priory

This hike, which mainly takes place on field paths and small roads with very little traffic, offers beautiful heritage sites and views.

For the most part, the route has been designed and marked by the Vienne departmental committee of the FFRP (the end ofthe PR®® has been short-circuited as it is of limited interest and runs too close to the A10 motorway).

(Please note) The route is interrupted between (8) and (9) due to the closure of a passage through an active quarry (see messages posted on 10/12/25). A detour is being considered. In the meantime, please use the alternatives described in the practical information section.

Description of the walk

Departure from Place Maurice Bedel, which offers shaded parking (hiking sign) opposite the Usseau school and near the Saint-Hilaire church.

Markings: Brick red + Pale blue

(S/E) Head north towards the church, follow the D75 and leave the church on your right. At the intersection (cross), turn left and follow the D9 towards Leigné-sur-Usseau. Then take the first small road on the right and pass by the Château de La Motte on your left. Pass the hamlet of Les Portes Rouges.

(1) At the next intersection, turn left onto a grassy path. At the end, follow a small road to the right. Soon, the tarmac gives way to a path. Go downhill, cross a stream and go back up the opposite side on a grassy path. At the corner of a fence, turn right and rejoin the tarmac.

(2) When the road turns right, take thesecond path on the left (grassy path). Walk past a house on your left and continue along a sunken path. Ignore a path branching off to the right, stay parallel to a power line and pass at the foot of a pylon. Walk past a copse on your left, continue between the fields, ignore a path branching off to the left and you will soon come to a small road. Follow it to the right for about 50 metres.

(3) At the crossroads, turn left towards La Bâte. Walk past a pigeon farm on your right, then a wood on your left. At the next crossroads, take a kind of cattle grid (for game), turn left and enter the woods. Follow the main path, west-west then south, ignoring vague tracks on either side. Take a second cattle grid, leave the woods and continue between the fields. You will come out onto a small road. Follow it to the right for about 75 metres.

(4) Then take a small road on the left towards La Pidoire. When the road turns right, leave it and take a grassy path on the left. Ignore a path on the left and continue to the houses of La Coudrinière. The path then gives way to tarmac. At a place called Les Rimbaults, continue straight ahead on a path.

(5) After about 150 metres, turn right onto a downhill path. Cross a stream, turn left with the path and go uphill.

(6) Follow the road to the left. At the next crossroads, continue straight on towards Les Métiviers and Saint-Éloi, and go down the road. At the bottom, take a grassy path on the left which, at the beginning, runs parallel to the gravel access road to Les Métiviers.

(7) Shortly before a small road, turn sharply right and go uphill. Ignore a path on the left (not shown on the map), walk past a house on your left and rejoin the tarmac road. At the next intersection, continue straight ahead and note the Prieuré de Remenueil on your right.

(8) At the next crossroads, first turn right then left to follow a small road (oratory). Cross the facilities and buildings of a quarry. Pass a large gate on your left and then two large stone saws on your right. Continue east on a path lined with a hedge on the left (note a pond and a manor house on the right). Come out onto a small road and follow it to the right.

No markings

(9) At the T-junction, turn left. At the intersection after about 50 metres, continue straight ahead on the small road (ignore the green arrow indicating a right turn). At the next junction, go straight ahead on a path.

(10) At the end, turn left. At the next junction, turn right onto Allée du Moulin and descend into a residential area.

Red brick markings

At the end, turn left and enter Usseau. Walk past the school and, at the end of the road, you will find yourself back at Place Maurice Bedel (S/E).

Notes

Hiking boots are recommended. The grassy paths are poorly maintained or not maintained at all (as of May 2019): expect to get your feet wet in the morning dew or after rain. In summer, bring appropriate sun protection.

Bar-tobacconist in Usseau, next to the church.

A 1:25,000 map is useful (at least the one accompanying this description).

Warning:
After (8), the route crosses a quarry that is in operation during the week, which means large vehicles, noise and dust. Please remain cautious on this section. See below for two alternative routes.

Alternatives to avoid the quarry:
- At point (7), turn left onto a path not shown on the map. After about 100 metres, you will come to a road; follow it to the right. Continue straight ahead to the car park where you started.
- At point (8), turn left onto the D75 and continue straight ahead to the starting car park.

Worth a visit

In the centre of Usseau (S/E):
- Usseau Church.
- Former blacksmith's workshop.
- Memorial stone donated by the commune of Rémeling (Moselle) in gratitude for the reception of 242 refugees evacuated in September 1939.

La Motte Castle, shortly after (S/E):
Castle built in 1452 on a mound where a previous castle had been built in the 12th century. The castle was remodelled in the 18th and 19th centuries. Visits on Saturdays and Sundays from April to September (medieval garden).

Remeneuil Priory, near (8):
Church built in the 12th and 13th centuries, of which only the bell tower remains, and to which the current church was added in the early 16th century.

Elsewhere along the way:
- Several beautiful tuffeau stone houses.
- Pigeon breeding in La Bâte (3).
- Stone quarry after (8).

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

Hello again,

Thank you very much for your clear and prompt reply.

First, I will put a warning message on the hike description. Then, I will see how to modify the route accordingly (this may not be immediate as I do not live in the area).

Hello, this is a permanent closure (gate)
the route is marked when you reach the private quarry
A marker indicates a diversion, but there are no further markers after that.
Kind regards

Hello Kiki Bourdichon, thank you for your feedback.

We are sorry to hear that you had to go around the quarry. This is the first time we have heard of this happening.

Did you see any information about dates or temporary closure? Or do you think it is a permanent closure? Thank you in advance if you have any details.

Between points 8 and 9, it is impossible to cross the quarry (private property and closed).
Bring a map or GPS to bypass the quarry.

A hike through fields and meadows, with a beautiful view of the Château de la Motte. As is often the case in the Vienne department, this hike will take you along tarmac roads, but not too many, which will lead you to small villages. The only downside to this hike is between points 8 and 9: a quarry, which spoils the whole landscape. And watch out for construction vehicles that may be driving around! Remember that you are not technically allowed to enter the quarry. If I turn a blind eye to this aspect, this hike is very pleasant to do, without any particular difficulty. Perhaps sometimes the paths are overgrown with grass, which tends to indicate that few people travel this route.

A beautiful hike in ideal conditions.
I hesitated a little at point 2. At first, I went straight ahead, then I retraced my steps
to turn left. Clear explanations made it easy to follow the map.

A very pleasant walk! Easy and very peaceful.
Very pretty houses along the route.
Not recommended on very hot days as there is little shade.
One small downside is the section through the fields between points 1 and 2, which is poorly maintained and therefore difficult to walk on due to the grass.
You can shorten the hike at point 7 by heading towards the town centre.
We completed it in 2 hours 45 minutes at a leisurely pace.

A very beautiful hike with stunning views and vistas of the region, and the magnificent Château de la Motte is almost always in sight. Best recommended during the colder seasons as it is almost entirely exposed. There is the option of a shorter route by joining Usseau from point 6 via a very easy grassy path. This shorter route is approximately 6.5 km long.

It was our first outing "within 20 km". We didn't know anything about it. The proximity of the motorway can be off-putting, but for us there was no traffic, and in principle we are not downwind and we are only close for a short time.
Pretty houses, scattered dwellings, passable in winter in wet weather with hiking boots, but no muddy patches.
