Description of the walk

After Rue de la Mairie in Aragon, cross the Ruisseau de la Valette and park in the car park below on the right just after the bridge.

Yellow markings throughout the route.

(S/E) Head south on the road that climbs to the right of the Moulin de Vignore. This road becomes a dirt track and leads to a large crossroads.

(1) Turn right towards Carcassonne. After 100 m, just after a sign indicating a right-hand bend, turn right, heading due west, onto a grassy track that climbs gently towards Font de l'Orme. Pass to the right of this large, uninhabited building, continue along the dirt track that opens up before you and arrive at a Fork in the road.

(2) Take the track on the right (speed limit 20 km/h for cars and bicycles). Continue along this track, heading north-west and ignoring all the paths branching off to the right or left. DFCI water tanks are signposted a little further on as you approach the Plaine de Montolieu.

(3) At the four-way junction, turn right and pass in front of the beautiful, secluded residence at Rude Mine. Join a track running alongside military land and continue to the right until the next junction (elevation 293).

(4) Turn right onto a path that winds gently through open country. At the three-way junction, keep right and head towards Malportel.

(5) At the end of the buildings in the hamlet, turn right onto a narrower path that descends towards the Font de Clavel. Crossing the Ruisseau de la Valette can be tricky here in wet weather; you can walk along the banks instead. Then follow the straight path to the T-junction.

(6) Head left towards the high-voltage power line, go under it, cross the Auzy del Plo before reaching the tarmac road (D148). Turn right and follow this local road for a few hundred metres.

(7) At the left-hand bend, on the edge of the forest, take the small path to the right of the cross, which initially runs parallel to the road before branching off to the right to cross it a little further down. Continue straight on along the Chemin du Pesquié and enter Fraisse-Cabardès. Take a moment to admire the highly unusual wash house and drinking trough in the village of Fraisse. Walk up the main street and pass the church (often open).

(8) At the statue of the Virgin Mary, turn right onto Rue des Graves, cross a bridge and continue along this small road, negotiating a few bends, until you reach a T-junction (elevation 339m).

(9) Turn right, following the sign for “entre Puits and heath” onto a path that narrows and winds through the undergrowth. Ignore two turn-offs to the right and you’ll reach a three-way junction.

(10) Head south-east by taking the path on the left. Follow the Rec de Capservy. At the next junction (elevation 324), continue straight ahead. The path on the left leads to the former Capservy Abbey, now converted into a lodge, which still features the remains of a few arches. Proceed to the next fork.

(11) Turn right, following the yellow markings, to reach, after about 200 m, another junction at Clapier d’Amen.

(12) Ignore the first path on the left, walk a few metres further and turn left at a 90° angle onto a narrow, barely visible path! This heads towards the bottom of the valley; follow the yellow markings south-east, ignoring all paths or tracks branching off to the right or left. Further on, keep your distance from the Ruisseau de la Combe Petite, still heading south-east, and reach the drystone shelters, where you’ll come to a fairly wide forest track at La Fount de Cussou.

(13) Follow it for a few hundred metres to theD935A (Rue du Cimetière), which is the entrance to Aragon.

(14) Turn left, then immediately right to head up Rue du Barri. Make the most of the village’s tranquillity to wander through the narrow streets. Pass the town hall, cross the bridge over the Ruisseau de la Valette before returning to your car park (S/E).

A lovely walk in spring, with lots of flowers in bloom – the air is filled with the scent of thyme!
It’s not at all difficult, it’s well signposted and the scenery is varied.
There’s little shade up to the village of Fraisses-Carbades, but after that the route is fairly shaded!
Make sure you take the time at the end of the walk to stroll through the pretty streets of the village of Aragon!

Very easy hike with little elevation gain, beautiful view of the Pyrenees that day.
A few sections in water, but that's not surprising given the rain that has fallen over the last two months. Best done in winter or in cool or overcast weather as there is little shade. Very beautiful village in Aragon.

Route undertaken in magnificent autumn weather, we travelled through the pastoral plains and valleys of Cabardès beneath the foothills of the Montagne Noire and the rich heritage of Aragon.

We don't know if this route is popular, but in any case, it is well marked. It's a good hike, despite the section between 2 and 3 being a bit long, but the fir trees are magnificent.

At the end of May, we were lucky to have a rather cool, very pleasant day.
The route is almost entirely open, and at this time of year we were able to enjoy all the wild flowers.
From No. 2 to No. 3, we found the "Montolieu plain" too long and tedious.
There are no particular difficulties along the entire route, but avoid doing this hike in the middle of summer as there is too much open terrain.
It's worth noting that Aragon, the starting point, is a beautiful village.
