Le Bau (Baou) de Saint-Jean

After a walk through a beautiful forest of scattered oak trees, this little-known peak is a stunning summit that can be climbed with little difficulty. The villages of Cipières and Gréolières are visible in the view. A wonderful discovery.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park along the D3, located at the junction of marker 260 in Bramafan.

(S/E) Take the tarmac road at marker 260, heading towards Pré-Royer (GR®51). A sign indicates “dead end”. Proceed with caution, as this road leads to a private residence. Pass a beautiful fountain, then marker 259, and continue for a further 100 m to reach the junction with a footpath.

Yellow markings

(1) Turn right: a well-meaning person has put up aGR®51sign, but it is the yellow markings that will guide us to the summit. The path climbs gradually through a sparse oak forest. At the junction with the Loup aqueduct, continue straight on following the yellow markings until you reach a crossroads where there is a one-metre-high stone shaped like an ‘open mouth’ (see photo). Nearby, a cluster of houses and a chapel form the Pré de Marthe. Continue to the left (north).

(2) Leave the path by veering to the right to head towards the house and see an ancient well. Then rejoin the path to the junction of trackways (cairn).

(3) Turn left and continue until the track ends (field).

(4) Turn left and continue along the track.

(5) At the 897m mark, stay on the track, which becomes tarmac about a hundred metres further on.

(6) Leave the track at this bend by heading left; a path descends and joins a grassy track which you will follow. It ends a few metres from a stone enclosure (see photo).

(7) From this ancient site, continue about fifty metres uphill to the ridge line. A lovely path runs along the sheer drop. Then pass under the rocky outcrop, heading north, through the vegetation, without attempting to climb. Reach a fork in the path.

(8) At this point, follow the path to the left to reach the summit of the Bau de Saint-Jean, an ideal spot for a break to admire the villages of Gréolières and Cipières.

(9) Turn back.

(8) Follow the path down to the left, which is not marked on the map but is well signposted with cairns. At the track, turn right to reach marker 170 a few metres further on.

(10) Continue a few metres to the right, then take the path on the left (south-east), towards Bois de Garavagne. Much further on, look out for a small lake on the right.

(11) Continue straight on at this junction. The forest is sparse, with many piles of stones lining the path.

(12) At this crossroads, turn right: signpost with no number, only indicating Bramafan. Turn left at the next fork (elevation 991) and continue straight on.

(13) Turn right onto the descending path, from where you can see the Pré Saint-Marthe below. Reach another junction with an unnumbered signpost.

(14) Turn left; after a few metres, the path runs alongside a distinctive stone fence, approximately 80 cm high and 2 m wide, stretching for 100 m. You will reach the junction marked by signpost 258.

(15) Turn right (north) towards Bramafan and return to the junction of the circular route.

(2) Turn left at this “open mouth” junction and retrace your steps along the outbound route in the opposite direction.

(1) At the tarmac road with no traffic, turn left and return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Hike suitable all year round.

A GPS or the Visorando app is useful from point (7) to point (8). The mobile app will be a great help.

Hiking boots and poles recommended. Stony terrain.

Take care after point (7) where you walk along a sheer drop, and at the summit (9).

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

A magnificent hike, very tough at the start as the climb is steep. Once at the top, there’s a magnificent 360° view; you can head back down via Le Castellet and then take the path towards St Jeannet. Stop for lunch on the way back. The descent is easier and shaded. A fantastic hike – definitely one to try.

We had a bit of trouble finding the path to Baou St Jean. There was a lot of vegetation around the ruins of the sheepfold, which led us astray.

A pleasant walk with a few minor navigation issues; from Pré de Marthe, we head north-north-west on virtually level ground, crossing private land marked by a flexible electric fence that is easy to get over (which earned us some unfriendly comments from the people riding horses there). The waypoints are not easy to spot unless you use GPS constantly, as the landscape is fairly uniform and has few distinctive features: a few extra photos in the area between waypoints 6 and 10 would be welcome.
From point 10 (marker 170) onwards, there are no further navigation issues, except at point 12 where you must not miss the path that descends to the right.

I have nothing to add; you’ve summed it up perfectly
I was hesitating about going off-trail, but you’ve reassured me about this route

No, I don’t think so. With the Visorando app, you can easily find your way. But it’s overgrown. After a few trips down it, it should be better.
Thanks for your great hiking tips!
PS: the circular loop is perfect, if that was your question

Hello Silvyand

Thank you for your comments
Question: wouldn’t it be better to take the return path straight away?
So, do a round trip from the lower path?
Best regards, b.

It’s a bit tricky to find the path on level 7, but it’s well worth the climb to the top. Stunning views; a really lovely walk!

Everything went smoothly as far as Pré de Martre – the scenery was as stunning as ever – but after that, things got tricky on the way to the summit; we couldn’t find it because there was too much vegetation blocking the path. From marker 170 onwards, the path was in very poor condition – this was due to Sunday’s heavy rain – all the way up to the 967-metre mark, after which the return to Pré de Martre was much easier.
