Lauzerte - Moissac

Thirty-third stage of the Way of St James. The GR®65 is a bit of a rollercoaster ride on this rather long stage. After the first climb, don’t forget to look back and admire the village of Lauzerte in the distance. Pigeon lofts and chapels, as well as vineyards and orchards, follow one after another. You gradually leave the Quercy Blanc behind, heading for the banks of the Tarn and the town of Moissac, which is well worth a visit.

Description of the walk

(S) Walk down the Passage du Pélerin, then turn left onto the Chemin du Fournil, following the red and white markings of the GR®65. Cross the road to Moissac with care and pass the Pays de Serres secondary school on your left to reach the Stop sign at the junction with the D953.

(1) Cross carefully and continue straight ahead towards Saint-Jean on the D81.

(2) After the long straight stretch and the left-hand bend, turn right towards the south-east. Follow the GR® 65, which initially runs alongside a small pond and then, after a steep climb through the woods, joins the road at Le Chartron. Turn left and continue to the hamlet of Le Chartron:note the magnificent dovecote in the garden here.

(3) Head right after the dovecote and begin a descent that takes you to the Chapel of Saint-Sernin-du-Bosc.

(4) Continue down the hill and pass through the small hamlet of Martret before reaching the hamlet of Parry at a crossroads.

(5) Ignore thePR® signposting left and head right, then left as you cross the hamlet. Continue on to the bridge over the Barguelonne. Carry on to the D57.

(6) Turn right, then stay on the D-road for about 1.4 km until you reach a tiny signpost: be careful, it’s easy to miss this spot as the markings are very subtle.

(7) Turn left onto a grassy, uphill track running through the fields. Pass through the hamlet of Magaou before reaching the junction with the Route de Saint-Simplice.

(8) Turn left, then right a little further on to arrive, after a descent, in a vineyard near the hamlet of Les Clauzes.

(9) Continue left along a path running parallel to the Ruisseau de Bonnet.

(10) Turn right and continue on to reach the hamlet of Bonnet. Pass the Aube Nouvelle lodge and then turn right onto Chemin de l’Aube Nouvelle, before reaching the D2.

(11) Turn left just before the main road onto Chemin de Bonnet Haut, then continue to rejoin the D2, which you follow south-west along a narrow footpath to the roundabout in the village of Durfort-Lacapelette.

(12) Follow signs for Montauban, then at the next junction, head straight on towards Moissac: refreshments available at the Relais Saint-Jacques. Continue along the D16, pass the sports ground and carry on to the lodge.

(13) Turn left onto Chemin de Tartilles, then turn right a few dozen metres further on. Follow the Lembenne river and then cross it, continuing to the junction with the road at Les Tours.

(14) Turn right, pass the hamlet, followed by an orchard, and continue to the Stop sign. Cross the road, heading towards Saint-Hubert, and continue to the Stop sign at the junction with the D16.

(15) Cross carefully and continue straight ahead onto the small, slightly uphill tarmac road, following signs for La Baysse. Pass a law firm and then the Lodge Saint-Martin before entering the hamlet of the same name. Continue to the junction with a fire hydrant.

(16) Turn left onto Route de la Baysse and leave the hamlet, passing under the high-voltage power lines before reaching the junction with the D16.

(17) Cross carefully once more to take the small grassy path below, which runs parallel to the main road and later veers away from it, following a stream. Cross the Chemin de Mondou, continue straight ahead and proceed to a crossroads.

(18) Head left to reach the Route des Teyssière via a flight of steps. Turn right to reach the hamlet.

(19) Before entering the hamlet, turn left at the hairpin bend to continue along the winding road which joins the D16 after crossing the Ruisseau de Laujol.

(20) Turn left and follow the D16 along the narrow footpath, then turn left at the end of the fenced-off section onto the small tarmac road to Fournaise. Stay on this road for a few dozen metres before turning right (south) onto a stony track through the fields. Follow the edge of a wood until you reach an isolated house.

(21) Turn left towards the east, then right onto Chemin Favel Bas to reach a rest area marked by a sign and a bench.

(22) Turn right onto Chemin d'Espi. Walk past the “Le Colibris d'Espis” lodge, under the high-voltage power line, before reaching the access road to the church and cemetery at Espi. Continue in the same direction along Chemin d'Espis.

(23) Continue straight on along the Chemin de Merle, which is closed to vehicles over 19 tonnes. Pass through the hamlets of La Garenne, Aujoy and La Pétasse in succession.

(24) At the junction with Chemin de Belle Île, continue in the same direction along Chemin de Rullet.

(25) Head straight ahead, cross the Ruisseau de Bartac and continue along a grassy path before reaching the D957.

(26) Turn left and continue along the D957 with care. Go straight through the roundabout, following the signs for “Moissac Abbatiale et son Cloître”. Continue to the cemetery.

(27) Turn right onto Chemin des Vignes (against the flow of traffic) and continue to Avenue du Chasselas (D927). Head right along the avenue, then, before the bridge that passes under the railway line, turn right onto Chemin de Ricard and follow it.

(28) At the end of the road, turn left, cross the railway line carefully and continue to the junction with Rue du Faubourg Sainte-Blanche: refreshments available at the Casino supermarket. At the traffic lights, turn right and continue towards the historic centre.

(29) At the roundabout, continue straight on along the small shopping street Rue de Malaveille, towards the Tourist Office and the Abbey Church of Saint-Pierre. Continue past the covered market until you reach Place des Récollets. Turn right onto Rue de la République and head towards the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Moissac.

(30) Opposite the monument, turn left onto Rue Marcassus, then left again to take the small uphill road on the right, leading onto Boulevard de Brienne (D7). Continue to the monument to the glory of Moissac, then turn left towards Castelsarrasin and Île du Bidounet.

(31) Cross the Garonne side canal and continue along Rue du Pont, keeping in the same direction until you reach the Tarn. Cross the Pont Napoléon.

(32) Turn left onto Rue du Languedoc. At the ‘Give Way’ sign, head left towards the Moulin de Bidounet campsite, located a few hundred metres further on along the banks of the Tarn (E).

Passing through the villages of Lauzerte (S) and Durfort-Lacapelette (12) and vineyards (Chasselas).

(28) Moissac, established as a monastic market town, undoubtedly developed in the shadow of the great Abbey of Saint-Pierre, which legend tells us was founded by King Clovis.

A solo hike in January, with very low temperatures (-7°C in the morning!). It was very misty, but the landscapes, covered in frozen dew, were absolutely magnificent. Paradoxically, the cold made walking easier, as the paths—which had been muddy from the rain the previous week—had frozen over, preventing me from sinking into the mud.
There was quite a bit of tarmac, mind you, but very little traffic at this time of year.
On the other hand, this stage is quite long and we were absolutely knackered by the time we reached Moissac.

Over 11 days, I walked the Conques–Moissac route through the Célé Valley.
The signposting is clear and well-placed.
The only downside is on the Lauzerte-Moissac section at the entrance to Durfort Lacapelette:
the diversion to avoid the RDép is not signposted (at least the signposting for taking the RD is very visible and has not been removed).
Thank you for everything (routes, altitudes, map, elevation profiles, etc.).
