Lantenay via the Cave aux Loups from Fleurey-sur-Ouche

A circular route starting from Fleurey-sur-Ouche that leads to two plateaus via the Cave aux Loups, a ruined feudal castle belonging to the Dukes of Burgundy, the Chapelle Saint-Louis, the Château de Lantenay and the Viaduc de Fain, before returning via the suburbs of Velars-sur-Ouche and the banks of the Ouche.

Description of the walk

Head to Fleurey-sur-Ouche. Enter the old village by walking down the main street, cross the canal bridge and then, immediately after the bridge over the Ouche, take the first right onto Rue de l’Église. Park in the square with the plane trees.

(S/E) From the car park, head back up Rue de l’Église (one-way for vehicles) to the bridge over the Ouche.

(1) Cross Rue du Château and, as you pass, read the information about “the unruly river”. Turn right to walk up Rue du Château. Shortly afterwards, on the left, you’ll see an 18th-century castle.
You can turn right onto Rue du Clos de la Cure for a return trip to Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church (7th–12th century).

Continue towards the cemetery. Walk alongside it towards Lantenay along the D104 until you reach the end.

(2) Leave the road and turn left onto a dirt track. Follow it straight on, ignoring any side paths, until it ends at a T-junction.

(3) Turn right. This field path passes under a high-voltage power line before reaching the Paris-Dijon railway line.

(4) Turn left without crossing the railway bridge. Walk along the hillock, keeping to the right until you reach a tarmac farm track. Turn right to cross the bridge over the railway line. Once on the D 104c, Route d’Ancey, turn right and walk 60 m until you reach a grassy track on the left.

(5) Follow this path as it climbs towards the woods. At the start, a low-voltage power line runs alongside it on the left. You will then pass under three power lines (one medium-voltage and two high-voltage). Shortly after entering the woodland, go straight ahead through a gate (green and white) whilst following the signs for “Route de Lantenay”.

Pass under another high-voltage power line. When you reach a flat area, keep to the right (yellow markings). Shortly afterwards, you will see a clearing on the right, then the path drops steeply for a short distance.

(6) Just before a right-hand bend, turn sharply right into a path that runs between two large trees. Follow it to the ridge line, then turn left whilst continuing along it. This new path winds its way. At one point, there is an unobstructed view of a plateau below and the Flavignerot radio mast. Shortly afterwards, you’ll reach the start of another path on the right.

(7) Descend steeply along this path to reach the Cave aux Loups 70 metres further on. There, a blue eye will be watching you. Retrace your steps to rejoin the ridge path.

(7) Once back, turn right and follow the ridge all the way, taking in the many views, until you reach a clearing marking the end of the Combe d’Arvaux. Walk past the information post, straight ahead for 20 m, to join a wide stony path.

(8) Turn left and, at the next crossroads a few metres further on, keep to the right to enter the woodland. Further on, when you reach two hunting lookouts, turn right onto a grassy woodland path. Follow it all the way to its end, at the T-junction.

(9) Turn right and continue straight on until you reach the D104k (signposted on the left). Cross the road and, at the bend, take the white track leading off to the left.

(10) Immediately afterwards, turn right onto a stony path leading into the woods, which leads to a hunting lodge. Go round it, following the path to the right, then, once back at the same level, turn right onto a track through the woods. At the first three-way junction, keep left (signpost 24). At the second, keep right.

(11) Head down the path with ruins on your left. Follow it all the way to the Chapelle Saint-Louis.

(12) Enjoy the view over Lantenay and the surrounding area, then retrace your steps to the previous crossroads.

(11). Turn right, going round the ruins. Keep to the right on a clear, well-maintained dirt track. When you reach the corner of a field (on the left), the track turns right, goes up and then down again (with the field on your left). Ignore the side paths. Go round a watering hole for animals in the middle of the path, which soon turns into a track. It runs alongside a power line on the left and descends through woodland to end up behind the grounds of Lantenay Castle.

(13) When you reach the foot of the dovecote, turn right and follow the Chemin du Colombier. Pass in front of the gate at one of the castle entrances (caretaker’s house and chapel) and continue until you reach the D104. At the cross, turn left and proceed 100 m along the road, taking care.

(14) Turn right onto the white gravel track. Head straight on, passing under three power lines in succession. Turn left and then right; at the three-way junction, keep left (field on the left). At the crossroads of tracks in the open fields, continue straight ahead towards the fir trees. Pass under a high-voltage power line and then over the bridge spanning the railway line.

(15) Turn left immediately after the bridge. This stony path runs alongside the railway line (marker on the left). At its end, where it becomes a footpath, it descends particularly steeply (43 m drop over 120 m) to the foot of the Fain Viaduct.
After the steep descent, head off from the bottom to the right onto the path leading to the crossroads.

(16) Return to the original white path, keeping to the left. Head uphill and enter the outskirts of Velars-sur-Ouche via Rue de la Combe de Fain.

(17) When you reach a stone wall on your right, turn sharply right onto a stony path (fire hydrant 3481 at the corner). Follow the Chemin du Creux de Suzon downwards between a stone wall on the left and villas on the hill to the right. Continue along this path, through meadows, to Fleurey-sur-Ouche. Pass under two medium-voltage power lines and very close to the River Ouche (small waterfalls). Enter Fleurey via Rue des Roches d'Orgères. Head towards the square with the plane trees (S/E).

Notes

Walking poles are recommended on the uphill and downhill sections in wet weather ((7) access to La Cave aux Loups and (15) Fain Viaduct, in particular).
A pair of binoculars is useful for viewing from the open heights.
(12) Picnic facilities available at the Chapelle Saint-Louis (on the grass).

Alternative route:
(15) For the less adventurous, from the railway bridge, continue straight ahead. Follow the poorly maintained white path which descends steadily, veering to the left until you reach a crossroads of tracks in the woodland (16) and turn left to reach the Viaduc de Fain.

Worth a visit

- Take the time to stroll through Fleurey-sur-Ouche along the canal, beside the Ouche.
On Rue du Château, stop to read the information boards: At the school; at the Ouche bridge, “The Unruly River”; the 18th-century Castel – a neo-Gothic villa; the Church of Saint John the Baptist, built between the 7th and 12th centuries.

- La Cave aux Loups, located in the Combe aux Mammouths. This is a small cave filled with stalactites and stalagmites.

- Numerous vantage points from the ridge overlooking the Combe d’Arvaux (views of the plateau, the Flavignerot radio mast, etc.).

- The Chapel of Saint Louis, dating from the 12th century. Restored. Lava-stone roof. Situated on the site of the first fortified castle of the Dukes of Burgundy. Inside, listed 13th-century frescoes. Former Chapel of Our Lady of the Dukes’ Castle. Numerous ruins in the surrounding area.

- Château de Lantenay. 17th-century building (1655), with a chapel and dovecote. Altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. French-style gardens surrounding the château, designed by Antoine Bouhier between 1700 and 1740.
Best viewed from the D104 towards the village of Lantenay.

- Fain Viaduct. A two-tiered railway bridge with a semi-circular arch, 43 m high. Two derailments in 1888 and 1962 (600 passengers, 39 dead and 47 injured), destroyed by the Germans in 1944.

- From Chemin du Creux de Suzon, it is possible to approach the banks of the Ouche. On the return to Fleurey, in succession: pass on the right in front of the Moulin shelter dating from the Mesolithic period (9000–5000 years ago). On the left, the Chemin du Moulin des Roches (pre-1814) with information on the operation of the marble quarries in the area. Then, a (former?) climbing site on the right managed by the CAF.

A pleasant route with beautiful views. You can picnic near the Saint Louis Chapel with a view of Lantenay.
We took the alternative route to avoid the steep descent from the Fain viaduct. It seems to me that in this case, at point 16, you should not return to the viaduct but turn right to rejoin the original path.
Thank you for this spring hike.

A beautiful hike enhanced by the colours of autumn, offering many discoveries and beautiful views. There are only two technically challenging sections: the return trip to the wolf cave (7) and the steep path to the viaduct (15).
We avoided the latter by following the alternative route.
We hike without GPS and had no difficulty following Pierre Passé's perfect description. Many thanks to him, as well as for all the details he provided.
We stopped for lunch at the Saint-Louis chapel (12), which is a very pleasant spot.
There is a picnic table at the entrance to Lantenay (13).

The route description was perfect; all the details were useful.
I didn't have a map or GPS. I just downloaded the attached files and map.
However, I would advise against the steep descent along the viaduct (15). It is better to follow the directions added in
"practical information"
Thanks to Pierre Passé.

A hike in four groups of six, as recommended by the FFR.
No major difficulties.
Care must be taken on certain slippery sections.

A very beautiful hike in sunny weather. Beautiful scenery.
The descent from the Fain viaduct is quite difficult for walkers of average ability.

A beautiful hike in the winter sunshine, we really enjoyed the scenery (no leaves on the trees) but it was slippery! Especially at the cave au loup (blimey, I've put on weight, I don't get stuck in the tunnel anymore!) and the descent from the Fain viaduct...
