Description

(S) From Eden Place Picnic Area, cross the road and take the path to the right, after a short distance this will branch to the left and then join the Consett and Sunderland Railway Path/C2C Cycle Path. Follow this cycle path first in an easterly direction and then the path turns southeasterly direction passing under the A693.

(1) The cycle path will then turn easterly again after crossing the bridge over Station Lane and will then pass the Old King Cole Sculpture.

(2) After about 600m you will reach a path which crosses the cycle path, turn right, there should be a long building to your right as you walk down this path towards the houses. When you reach the houses, cross the road (Elmway) and follow the footpath between the houses (Ashleigh). When you reach the road turn left into Elmway.

(3) There will be a public footpath sign on your right, ignore this and turn into Maplewood. Follow this road which will bend first to the left and then after ?? to the left again. On this corner there are public footpath and cycle path signs.

(4) Follow the public footpath down the steps and through the woodland until you emerge on Pelton Fell Road.

(5) Turn left and then immediately left again, away from the road up a dirt footpath. Follow this footpath which follows Chester Burn. The footpath will then pass under the main Eastcoast Mainline Railway. To your right will be a Tesco supermarket.

(6) When the footpath reaches the road (North Burn), turn left and walk alongside Chester Burn and then the market place. At the crossroads, cross straight over into Picktree Lane.

(7) At the mini roundabout, turn left and follow the road into Church Chare, continue until you reach St Mary and St Cuthbert's Church (E).

Accessibility: This route follows cycle paths and mostly paved surfaces apart from (4) to (5) which has a large number of steps. To make this route fully accessible, once you have seen the Old King Coal Sculpture (1), turn back towards Station Lane and take the paved path to your left. At the bottom go straight ahead.
