Access: Coming from Le Triadou on the D17E3, at the entrance to the village of Les Matelles, park on the grass verge on the right-hand side next to the plane trees, opposite the bridge over the Lirou.
(S/E) From the car park, cross the road and head towards the bridge opposite, cross it and immediately turn right (stairs). This leads to Chemin des Marianettes, which you follow for 100 m before leaving this road and turning completely left onto Chemin des Pérayrols. Follow it for 320 m and look for the second cul-de-sac on the left, called Impasse des Pérayrols. Leave it and, 10 m after, turn right into another cul-de-sac, just before a plot planted with a few olive trees.
(1) Follow this cul-de-sac to the end, then turn left towards the tennis courts, which you will follow on the right to reach Chemin des Moulières. Follow this road for 100 metres southwards, cross Rue de la Reyrète and take Chemin de Cantaussels opposite until you reach the Roucayrol stream. Cross it via a submersible bridge and continue along the path through the vineyards until you reach a T-junction.
(2) Take the path on the right and follow it for 100 m, then leave this path and turn left onto the path that winds through an uncultivated plot to reach the foot of the hill 100 m further on. This path climbs for about ten metres and meets another path perpendicular to it, which you should take to the right for 500 m (south-southwest).
(3) When you see the house under the trees, 20 m before the boundary between the land and the plot of this house, notice a path on your left going up the embankment and follow it to the top of the hill, where it meets a wide ridge path. An IGN marker is located just opposite, on the edge of the ridge overlooking the plain to the west. Go up to the left, heading north-northeast, following this open ridge path to the ruined tower.
(4) From the Tour de Vias, an old watchtower, there is a beautiful view of Les Matelles, Pic Saint-Loup and the former convent of Notre-Dame des Champs. Continue along the path towards the north-east, staying on the ridge. After 1 km, when you see the Romanesque bridge close by, between the trees below, keep to the left and descend towards the bridge via a rocky path, cross the RD112 and you will immediately reach the bridge.
(5) The Romanesque bridge of Les Deux Serres crosses the Lirou and leads to the path on the other side, which you follow to the left towards the north-west for 400m. At the next T-junction, turn left and then, 60 metres further on, take the path on the right between the two rows of mulberry trees. It faces the bell tower of the former convent. Cross the D17E3 with caution.
(6) In front of the gate of Notre-Dame des Champs (now a retirement home), go around the old convent on the right; on the north side, at the level of the church choir, go up the Way of the Cross on the right to the chapel, then go back down the same cypress-lined alley.
At the bottom, there are two options:
if the path is blocked on the right (sometimes), return to the gate of Notre-Dame des Champs and continue opposite on the dirt track, cross the small paved road after 150 m, take the path opposite which continues for 400 m, etc. - here, follow the normal description in the following paragraph at point (X)
If the path is not blocked, continue around the bend until you reach a large pond and a small paved road. Follow this road south for 100 m. 50 m before reaching the RD, take the path on the right which, after 400 m, continues (X) as a rocky trail. Ignore the first path which, in a right-hand bend, branches off to the left and continue climbing. Just after crossing the top of the hill, a wide path curves off to the left.
(7) Take this path, which winds through a forest of pine, juniper and holm oak trees, passes at the foot of an EDF pole and then descends towards the road, which it joins near a transformer. Descend to the left towards the village.
(8) At the porch of the church bell tower, you can walk underneath and wander at your leisure through the streets of the medieval village before returning to the same point on the circuit to continue down the street to the end and turn left to return to the starting point (S/E).
