La Servelle from Brette

This is a long hike but without any technical difficulties apart from the relatively steep grassy slopes below the summit of La Servelle. Your efforts will be rewarded with a magnificent 360° view from Vercors to Ventoux and from Dévoluy to the Monts d'Ardèche! Return via a partial circular route passing through Champ Rabi.

Description of the walk

Park in the hamlet of Les Raynauds (Commune of Brette) at the end of the D135a.

(S/E) At the signpost for "Brette Les Raynauds 710 m", take the road towards "Grange Haute - Aucelon - Pennes-le-Sec" (yellow/red markings). At the first crossroads 200 m further on, turn left towards "Die - Crest - Aucelon" (road sign).

(1) After 500 m, leave the road and turn right onto Chemin du Pouget (road sign "no entry except for residents" and yellow/red markings crossed out). This very even path winds its way upwards.

(2) At the fifth bend (on the right), at the junction marked by young, elegant conifers, continue along the path on the right. A little further on, ignore a turn-off on the left.

(3) At the new fork in a bend to the right, continue to the right and you will reach a wide track suitable for vehicles (end of Chemin du Pouget, road sign indicating no entry).

(4) Turn left, following the yellow/red markings ofthe GRP® Tour de la Vallée de la Roanne. Continue along the track, ignoring the paths on the left that lead to the Ravaux farm and its outbuildings. The track climbs steadily, offering increasingly expansive views, particularly of the Trois Becs and Montagne de Couspeau. It then turns sharply eastwards and crosses the valley between Champ Reynier and Bouscarome to reach the pastures.

(5) At the "Bouscarome" signpost, turn right towards "La Servelle". Look out for the yellow/red markings for theGRP® Tour de la Vallée de la Roanne variant and a road sign saying "sens interdit sauf riverains" (no entry except for residents). Go through the cattle grid, which may be open or closed depending on the season.

At the first hairpin bend, take the small path straight ahead (small cairn at the bend) and leave the yellow/red markings to follow the shortcut. The path is not very well marked, so stay in the same southerly direction and rejoin the path higher up at a second hairpin bend.

(6) Then leave the path again to follow the trail opposite (yellow/red marker). Following these markers is not easy in the pastures, but losing them is not a problem as the summit of La Servelle is in sight. Reach it at your leisure, but be careful when approaching the cliffs. Climb over the fence just before the summit.

(7) At the summit, admire the 360° view. Then descend due east, staying on the shoulder to the right of the fence. Pass the Col du Pin. Further on, at the fork in the path marked by cairns, continue straight ahead and to the right, still heading due east (shortcut).

(8) At the "Champ Rabi" signpost, take the track to the left towards "Brette Aucelon".

(9) After about 800 m, you will arrive at the 1944 equipment drop zone (marked by three monumental cairns, one of which has a commemorative plaque) opposite the signpost for "La Blachette": follow the track on the left towards "Bergerie du Serre de l'Église, Brette".

(9) Continue along this track for over a kilometre until you reach the signpost for "Bergerie du Serre de l'Église".

(10) Turn left, still heading towards "Bouscarome, Brette". Pass in front of the sheepfold and continue to the crossroads marked by the "Bouscarome" signpost.

(5) Continue straight ahead towards Brette. From this point, the return to Hameau des Raynauds follows the same route as the ascent.

(4) Be careful not to miss the Chemin du Pouget on the right below the Ravaux farm, as it is less visible when descending. Then follow the outward route to return to the hamlet of Raynauds (S/E).

Notes

There are no water sources along the route.
Be careful near the cliffs, especially at the top of La Servelle.
Le Serre de l'Église is a grazing area: respect the herds and keep dogs on a leash.

Worth a visit

The view from the top of La Servelle is unique. On a clear day, you can see all the peaks of the Vercors (to the north), the Dévoluy (to the east), the Drôme Provençale to the Ventoux (to the south), the Trois Becs massif and the Couspeau mountain (to the west).

The parachute drop zone (cairns and commemorative plaque): four parachute drops were made in May and June 1944 by the British to the Maquis du Diois. The message announcing the drop was "the herd will go up to the mountain pasture". The three cairns symbolise the fires marking the terrain. The containers were still there a few months ago.

The D135a road serving Les Reynaud is picturesque.

A very beautiful hike!
Magnificent panoramic views on the way there and back on a crystal clear, sunny day in November 2025.
The final climb up through the mountain pastures is a little more difficult, but the reward is well worth it. With strong, cold winds at the summit, we'll picnic in the sun, sheltered by a grove of trees.

It is indeed quite a long hike.
The highlight is definitely the tour of the plateau.
At this time of year, you get the added bonus of the lavender fields.

Hello,

We completed the route in beautiful weather. The views were spectacular and magnificent throughout the hike. The flowers have just started to bloom on the slopes of La Servelle.
The tour took 4½ hours, covering 19.4 km (?) with an elevation gain of 940 m.
Thanks to whoever designed this route, which is more interesting than the one via Volvent.

I enjoyed this hike so much when I first did it on 19 January this year, mainly in the snow, that I decided to go back again, this time on the first day of summer!
The landscapes were very different from those I had admired in January, but just as magnificent.
There were quite a few people at the top of La Servelle, and I was unpleasantly surprised to see five or six idiots on motocross bikes (!!!) damaging a small fence so they could get their bikes through!
On the way back, I decided to descend to Les Raynauds via the track (actually the GR) rather than the Chemin du Pouget, which I had already taken three times.
This route offers beautiful views of the surroundings of Brette.
I had to walk for five minutes along the road to reach my vehicle, which was parked at the entrance to Les Raynauds.
Duration of the hike: 5 hours 20 minutes.

A beautiful hike. Starting from Bouscarome, there is a very beautiful climb up to La Servelle, where we were captivated by the landscape – Devoluy, the Ecrins Massif, Vercors... We almost climbed backwards so we could admire the magnificent scenery.
Les Cairms, on the way back, gave us a fascinating glimpse into history.
Hike - perhaps best done in reverse from Bouscarome.
In any case, it's worth doing again.
Thank you.

A superb hike today in the cold, with fresh snow covering the paths.
Beautiful views of the Trois Becs as we climbed the switchbacks. Snow covered the trail from the flat section before "Bouscarome".
Then, a vehicle left tracks heading towards La Servelle, so I followed them, but they stopped at a fence. I therefore climbed up the mountainside in snow that was often frozen solid and no more than 10 centimetres deep. It took me 2 hours and 40 minutes from the hamlet of Les Raynauds to reach the summit of La Servelle, at 1,613 metres.
The section through the pastures presented no difficulty and did not seem steep to me, contrary to what was noted in the description. Exceptional views of the Vercors and Dévoluy. A freezing wind was blowing very strongly, so I didn't linger. I descended towards "Champ Rabi" with the fence on my left. I went there a bit at random, because on that part, the snow was quite thick and the traces of the path had disappeared. I stopped for a quarter of an hour to eat at the spot where the three cairns are located. I then reached "Bouscarome" by passing in front of the sheepfold and an hour and fifteen minutes later, I was at my car in the hamlet of Les Raynauds. 5 hours and 15 minutes of walking for about 915 metres of elevation gain.

The description indicates that the distance is 17.680 km, but if you refer to the signs, the total is closer to 22 km.
7.400 km from the hamlet of Les Raynauds to Bouscarome, then 2.400 km to the summit of La Servelle, 2.000 km to Champ Rabi, and 9.800 km to return to Brette, for a total of 21.600 km.
-The "Bouscarome" signpost indicates 1,285 m, not 1,284 m.
-The summit of La Servelle is not at 1,607 m, but at 1,613 m.
