The Twelve Apostles Stone from Wingen-Sur-Moder

This hike, tested on 15/01/2022, takes us to the Pierre des Douze Apôtres (Breitenstein), marking the border between Alsace and Moselle. This stone dates back to the time of the Druids and was used for sacrifices before being gradually transformed by Christianisation.
The hike follows forest paths through the forests of the Northern Vosges.

Description of the walk

Parking is available in the large car park at Wingen-sur-Moder station.

(S/E) From the car park, go down Rue de la Gare, leave it atthe first crossroads and continue eastwards on Rue des Orfèvres. At the end of the street, take the left turn and look out for several Club Vosgien markers ( see Practical Information).
Follow the yellow rectangle markers forthe GR®®532. Pass under the railway line and arrive at the Lalique district at a crossroads.

(1) Continue straight ahead onto Chemin du Pfälzerwald, which turns right and climbs slightly. Enter the forest and continue to the picnic area.

(2) Take the small path to the right of the picnic area and cross the footbridge over the stream to find a crossroads on the left.

(3) Leave the path on the right, which is theGR®®532, our return route. Keep left and follow the Blue Ring markings. The path runs along the Fischbaechel stream towards the north and joins the small road that leads to the village of Kohlhuette. When you leave the forest, continue to the crossroads at the entrance to the village.

(4) Turn left and cross the stream, then turn right onto the road climbing between the houses. At the end of the street, turn right and follow the blue ring markings towards Schumacher Felsen. After a few hairpin bends, turn left at the crossroads and continue straight on to the rock. Go around it, zigzagging up to the left until you reach the crossroads.

(5) Turn left onto the path leading to Stauffersberg. At the crossroads, turn right (Blue Triangle). The path heads north. Ignore the paths to the left or right until you reach a bend in the D12.

(6) Cross the road carefully and continue north. The path runs alongside the road and leads to the Twelve Apostles Stone at the junction of the D12 and D37.

(7) Take a few moments to admire the monument. Then turn right (relative to the direction of arrival) onto Chemin des Bornes, a forest road. Follow the blue triangle markings eastwards and walk to a crossroads.

(8) Leave the forest road and turn right onto the Green Triangle marked path. Follow it downhill for about 2 km. Pay attention at the following intersections until you reach the Col de Kindsbronn.

(9) At the pass, turn right onto theGR®®532(yellow rectangle). After about 200 m, theGR®® joins a forest road that leads to Wingen-sur-Moder (marked with a red diamond and yellow rectangle), heading south-southwest until it crosses the D12.

(10) At the junction, take the path opposite. After 200 m, it joins the junction you came across on the way there.

(3) Immediately turn right onto the footbridge over the Fischbach to return to Wingen-sur-Moder station, taking the same route as on the way there (S/E).

A beautiful, shaded hike, but no viewpoints.
At one point, you have to search a little for the Club Vosgien markers, which correspond to the description.
No worries with the Visorando app.

Very shady and easy trails.
The Twelve Apostles rock formation is magnificent... it's a shame that it's located at a busy crossroads.

Taken with a group of grandparents, starting from the Twelve Apostles, stopping for lunch near the benches at the original starting point, a great breath of fresh air at the Cordonnier cave
Many thanks from the Piverts of Couriere, Belgium.

A beautiful walk, well explained, but you need to pay attention as it's easy to take the wrong path (which is what happened to us). When climbing Stauffersberg, turn right when you reach the top after passing Schumacher Felsen.

An ideal route when it's hot and you're looking for shade from the trees and gentle slopes. The sandy paths are pleasant. However, the walk took less than 4 hours, which was significantly less than advertised.

A beautiful hike without any particular difficulty in the forests of the Northern Vosges, which deserve to be better known.

Hello

It is still a blue beacon + ring (not a blue triangle).

It has been corrected, thank you.

See you soon.

Two comments:
- In the description, there is an error in the markings mentioned: at waypoint 4 (Kohlhuette), it is still a blue ring marker (not a blue triangle) until Stauffersberg; it is from this last point that you should follow the blue triangle.
- After waypoint 8 (crossroads - green triangle), tree felling work is underway and the path is often blocked for at least 1 km. It is advisable to wait until the logs have been cleared before using this path.
