La Mare aux Poissons Rouges and the Arche de la Nature

The Mare aux Poissons Rouges is an artificial pond which hosted a procession from the early 20th century until the Second World War.
The procession set off from the church at Yvré-l’Évêque and passed through the grounds of the Château de l’Arche.
Today, the pond has been cleaned up and is home to many protected amphibians, such as the marbled newt.

Description of the walk

Park at the Granges car park.

The route follows the green markings, but in some places you’ll need to leave these markings to follow this walk. Follow the route description and map carefully.

(S/E) Cross the road and walk along it heading due east, whilst staying within the forest. Follow the green markings. Cross the road again and follow the path branching off to the right, heading north-east, which leads deeper into the forest. Alternative route: you can walk across the car park if you’d rather avoid crossing the road twice.

(1) Turn right after passing a large hole on your right that might look like a shell crater. You’ll arrive at the Mare aux Poissons Rouges (don’t bother looking for the goldfish – there aren’t any).
Head off again towards the south-east, following the green markings.

(2) Please note: ignore the green markings and take the shortcut that heads left towards the north.
When you reach a large clearing, walk past an archery range. Continue along the path towards the north-west. Go round the Futaie car park on the left, following a small botanical trail towards the wind turbine.
N.B. This car park can serve as the starting and finishing point for those coming from Yvré-l’Evêque, for example

(3) Take the wide path leading off to the left. Continue along this path for over 500 metres, keeping straight on.

(4) Turn left, heading due south, at the signposts (see photo) and the bench. Stop following the green markings and head back to the car park (S/E).
