The Haute Côte and the Slåttdalsskrevan fault in Skuleskogen

(Note to moderators) Please avoid, if possible, modifying the route or recalculating the altitudes, as the DTM is much less accurate than GPS in this area, resulting in a highly inaccurate topographic map! Thank you!

In the heart of Skuleskogen National Park, this route offers a spectacular immersion in the wild landscapes of the Swedish High Coast. Amidst boreal forests, scree slopes, tranquil lakes and panoramic views of the Baltic Sea, the route leads to the iconic sites of Slåttdalsskrevan and Slåttdalsberget. A varied and exotic hike, where every step tells the impressive geological story of a land that has been rising day by day since the last ice age.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the Entré Syd (south entrance) to Skuleskogens Park.

Orange markings

(S/E) Start climbing and enter the park. After about 1.5 km, at the T-junction, turn left.

(1) Pass the large scree slopes on your left. Continue until you cross a rocky gully.

(2) A path branches off to the right, leading up to the summit of Slåttdalsberget. The round trip follows the Blue Markings. The section here is more challenging, requiring you to climb the rock face using the chains and pegs provided. However, it is possible to bypass this section and continue straight ahead.

(3) At the summit, retrace your steps.

(2) Return to the path you left a little earlier, and continue to the right.

(4) At the viewpoint overlooking the great Slåttdalsskrevan fault, continue to the left.

(5) Reach the heart of the Slåttdalsskrevan fault. Turn around and continue downwards.

(6) Reach the campsite by Lake Tärnättvattnen. At the junction, continue to the right.

Blue markings

A little further on, at the junction, turn right again. Descend for about 2 km.

(7) At the bottom, at the junction, turn right.

(8) Cross another camping area and continue straight ahead.

(9) Pass a final campsite and continue to the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

(1) The scree slopes you cross here are the remains of ancient beaches lifted by post-glacial rebound: these boulders were polished by the sea before ending up perched high above the current shoreline. The gravel and sand have disappeared, whilst the stones remain.

(4) Slåttdalsskrevan is a spectacular rock fissure carved into the granite, whose steep walls serve as a reminder of the power of geological fractures and erosion in the landscape of the High Coast. It was formed where an ancient vein of diabase (an igneous rock), more fragile than the surrounding granite, was gradually eroded and then hollowed out by glaciers, the sea and post-glacial uplift.
