The Dent de Rez from Saint-Vincent

The view from the summit of the Dent de Rez is one of the must-see sights in the southern Ardèche. This hike, which is shorter and easier than the classic route, can be completed in half a day.

Description of the walk

The start is in the hamlet of Saint-Vincent in the commune of Gras, next to the cemetery.

(S/E) Head north-east, leaving the cemetery on your right. Turn left and you’ll reach the Bréchon hiking signpost.

White-yellow markings

(1) Turn right towards Gogne.

(2) After crossing the La Nègue stream, ignore a wide track on both the right and left and continue along the path which climbs up to the Serrelia signpost

(3) Turn left, cross the hamlet of Gogne and continue left along the road, descending towards a small pass.

(4) At a junction of several forest tracks, ignore two tracks to the right and one to the left and continue along the path straight ahead. Climb up to the Dent de Rez signpost on the plateau.

(5) Take the forest track to the left up to the orientation table at the highest point.

Off the marked trail

(6) Shortly after the orientation table, at the start of a wider clearing, leave the marked trail and take a path on the left that heads back under the rocky outcrop. Follow this path until you reach a forest track at the Gerles signpost.

White-yellow markings

(7) Continue down this road, turning right then left at the following junctions.

(8) Please note: after a small wood, take a road on the left (Chemin du Bréchon). Then turn left onto the Impasse du Bréchon and take the path on the left which leads back to the Bréchon signpost.

(1) Continue straight ahead, then take the first road on the right to return to the starting point. (S/E)

Notes

The path between (6) and (7) is not signposted but is well-defined and well-used throughout. Although a little steep at the start, it is easier than the signposted path via the Col d’Eyrole, which crosses a rocky ridge where you’ll need to use your hands a bit.

Worth a visit

Before or after the hike, it’s well worth taking a short detour to explore the narrow streets of the village of Gras.

At stage 6, we preferred to follow the markings that lead to a dizzying descent down the rock face.

Take care during wet weather due to leaves and slippery rocks. Overall, no difficulty, pleasant scenery.

A group hike on a sunny, windless day. Gradual, gentle climbs. Magnificent views from the Dent de Rez viewpoint, where we stopped for a snack. A steep descent through the pass beneath the Dent, which should be avoided in wet weather. We went during the school holidays, which is why we came across a dozen other hikers.
