Dent de Rez via the Col d'Eyrole

Ascent to the highest peak of the Plateau des Gras, which, in good weather, offers a magnificent 360-degree panorama of the Upper Ardèche, the Cévennes, the Vercors and Provence. A hike with no major difficulties, though take particular care at the summit due to the presence of cliffs, which are not very high but dangerous nonetheless.

Be sure to follow the route in the direction indicated to enjoy the ‘wow’ factor when you reach the summit.

Description of the walk

Park in the small car park in the hamlet of Les Hellys, on the small road towards “Reynouard”.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, take the yellow and white marked path just above, until you reach a fork.

(1) Turn right, staying on the marked path, which winds between high stone walls with magnificent views of the summit. You’ll reach a wide track suitable for vehicles.

(2) Turn left, towards “École, Gogne”, onto the path that climbs gradually up to the Col d’Eyrole. Head towards the sheepfold.

(3) You can take a break here; the sheepfold is always open and provides shelter if needed, and you can even eat inside. There is also a visitors’ book and various information available. From there, you can also climb to the summit directly beneath the cliff via the marked path on the right, but this is steep and somewhat technical, though not dangerous, particularly at the rocky outcrop.

The suggested route therefore takes you along the wide path heading north-west, on a gentle downward slope. There are no signposts, but the path is clearly marked; a little further on, it turns into a trail, still clearly marked, and joins a wider path

(4) Turn right. The path gradually reaches a plateau where the vegetation becomes sparser, but with magnificent views over the Upper Ardèche. Please note that, depending on the time of year, herds of cows may be present; in this case, you must strictly follow the signs and close the gates of any enclosures you pass through.

(5) At the crossroads, turn right, following the yellow and white markings, and continue to the summit. An orientation table offers a magnificent panoramic view to the south. Please also take care near the cliffs with children; falling is strictly prohibited.

(6) For the return journey, take the path that runs below the summit and heads east; this is not signposted but remains clearly marked. Be careful, however, after rain, as it can be particularly slippery in certain sections. This path joins the wide track used on the way up.

(2) Turn right and, following the reverse route of the ascent, return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

There are no water sources along the route.

At the Col d'Eyrole (3) there is a restored old sheepfold, the entrance to which is always open.

Only the path from the car park to the Col d'Eyrole is marked in yellow and white. There are no markings on the rest of the route, but the path is very well marked, so please ignore the Yellow Cross and white markings.
