La Crête de l’Enveloppe and Le Roc la Tour

A two-part trail. The first section, through woodland, leads to an extraordinary jumble of rocks. The second takes you through a coniferous forest before offering a succession of magnificent panoramic views and vantage points over Monthermé and the Meuse valley.

Description of the walk

Starting point: Car park at the Auberge de la Roche à Sept Heures on the outskirts of Monthermé, heading towards Les Hauts Buttés.

First section:

(S/E) From the car park, head north-east and cross the RD989 onto theGR®. Take a small tarmac road leading to the Maison Forestière des Cerceaux. Continue past the forest house until you reach the signpost for Les Cerceaux.

(1) Turn right, leaving theGR®, and head down a stony path to the Route Forestière de la Lyre.

(2) Turn right onto the road and immediately head left onto the path marked in yellow. Continue to the signpost for La Longue Haie.

(3) Head up to the left, towards Auton, and join the Route Forestière de la Lyre at the Fontaine Muret bend.

(4) Turn immediately right, then left at the next Fork in the road. Stay on the main path until you reach a small, ascending track that joins theGR® route. Turn left towards the Roc la Tour site.

(5) Reach the Roc la Tour car park via the main access path to the site, cross the road and continue in the same direction until you reach the signpost for Chemin Lagard.

(6) Head down to the left towards Auton, then turn right to reach the Lyre stream.

(7) Cross the stream, then the road, and follow a yellow-marked path which generally follows the stream for 800 m, with a few crossings along the way (a few small footbridges help you on your way).

(8) The path crosses the forest road once more at elevation 253, then climbs and joins theGR® coming from the right before branching off to the left to pass beneath the site of the former Cerceaux quarries.

(9) Continue along the signposted path, return to the forest ranger’s house and head back to the car park where you started via the same route you took on the way out.

Second section:

(S/E) Head north-west along the tarmac road (signposted ‘La Longue Roche’) to the Roche à Sept Heures car park.

(10) Take the Route Forestière de l’Enveloppe (the one on the right). Walk 2 km to the Ponton depot (Route Forestière de l’Aiglon on the right).

(11) Continue for 300 m until you reach a crossroads.

(12) Turn left at the hairpin bend (GR® path, also marked in yellow). Climb to reach the top of the ridge and keep to the right (follow the yellow markings) to reach the paragliding launch site and, shortly afterwards, the Longue Roche viewpoint, where you’ll rejoin the GR®.

(13) Stay on the ridge path, carefully following the dual markings, and enjoy the many viewpoints before reaching the Roche à Sept Heures viewpoint.

(14) Continue the descent to reach, on the right, the other Roche à Sept Heures viewpoint.

(15) Carry on along the path which leads to the tarmac road and, 100 m further on, back to the starting point (S/E).

The route (map and GPX) misled me at point 4, putting me 300 metres lower down. I didn't see the little path, so I continued a little further and cut through the woods, then turned back to find the famous little path.
Apart from that, it was a very nice walk, even in the rain. I didn't have boots, so I got my feet wet crossing the stream.

Hello Nisu
To my knowledge, the footbridges over the Lyre stream have not been repaired and are unlikely ever to be.
If the stream is not flowing too strongly, you can cross without boots.
To be on the safe side and avoid carrying too much, if the stream is flowing strongly, you can follow the red and white markings of the GR 16 between points 7 and 8.
Enjoy exploring the region!

hello,
i'm coming to explore your region around 15 August and I'm planning to do the hike you suggest. I have a few questions about the comments: have the wooden walkways been repaired or should I put my boots in my rucksack?
Please let me know what the condition of the trail is like
best regards
a hiker from Franche-Comté

Good evening,
Thank you for your comment.
I just wanted to point out that this route is not signposted in its entirety, even though several sections are (red and white GR and yellow PR).
The routes published on Visorando are based on suggestions made by Visorando users and approved by moderators, but they are not necessarily signposted.
Enjoy your walks.

The signposting was fine at the start, but then virtually non-existent, which led us astray

Hello fzutterman
Thank you for your comment.
Between (7) and (9), you ‘just’ need to follow the yellow markings
The descent along the stream can be tricky at times on this walk.
There used to be a few wooden footbridges on the marked trail, but they’re no longer there.
When the water is flowing strongly, wellies are very useful.
Happy hiking

A superb walk, with few people around on weekdays during the off-season. Make sure you spot the start of the path leading up to point 8.
