The starting point is at the port of La Cotinière.
()S/E:: Set off along Rue du Port towards the north-west, where all the shops are located. Cross the whole of La Cotinière to the junction just past the chemist’s and the bike shop.
(1) Turn right onto Rue des Chateliers for 300 m, then take the cycle path to the hamlet of Les Chateliers. At the stop sign, turn left and follow a small road for 1.5 km; count three junctions before reaching a fork.
(2) Turn left and, at a right-hand bend, take the cycle path on the left, which ends at the hamlet of La Fromagerie.
(3) Turn right for 120 m, cross a road and join a new cycle path. At the hamlet of La Vignerie, turn left onto the cycle path, then right at La Blanchardière.
(4) At a place called Les Deux Moulins, cross the D734 and rejoin the cycle path which goes round the village of Chéray and arrives at the entrance to Saint-Georges d’Oléron.
(5) Turn right onto Rue de la Fontaine for 250 m, then left onto Rue des Quatre Moulins until it ends at Rue de la République. Turn right and continue along this street until you reach Rue Centrale de Saint-Georges.
(6) Turn left to reach the centre of Saint-Georges, pass between the church and the market hall and continue along the small street between the houses and the park. At the end of the street, turn right and continue straight on along Rue de Verdun until you reach the cemetery. At the cemetery car park, look for a small path that branches off to the left and crosses a marshy area before joining a cycle path.
(7) Turn right and follow this track, which bends left, crosses marshes and joins a road at a bend.
(8) Cross the road and rejoin the cycle path which runs alongside the D273 for 1 km, turn right, then immediately left and follow the D273 to La Brée-les-Bains. Go straight ahead through a roundabout, then turn right onto Rue du Général de Gaulle. Continue straight through the village to reach the beach.
(9) Head left onto the sea wall for 300 m and take a track that runs alongside the beach for 2 km. At the end, rejoin Boulevard de l’Océan and continue, keeping as close to the sea as possible, until you reach the marina.
(10) Continue as close as possible to the sea until you reach a height restriction gantry leading to a car park. Turn left onto Rue d’Antiochas, which climbs slightly, then take the first right and then left again. Continue straight on until you find a good path on the right.
(11) Follow this path until you reach the beach, then continue along the path running alongside the ocean to the hamlet of La Morelière and the motorhome service area. You can see the Chassiron lighthouse, which you can reach by following the road for 500m. A cycle park is available, allowing you to visit the lighthouse and its gardens.
(12) Set off again, going round the lighthouse to the right, first along a small road then along a good path that takes you back to the west side of the island. Leave the coastal path to join the cycle path at the lighthouse car park. Take the path to the right and follow it for 3 km until you reach a road.
(13) Turn right, then, at the Lachenaud junction, continue straight on towards Chaucre.
(14) At the fork at the entrance to the village, turn right for 100 m and then right again onto Rue des Conches Douces. At the second junction (Rue de la Plage), turn right then immediately left into Rue du Canot de Sauvetage and continue to Conche aux Lièvres.
(15) Retrace your steps and take the road on the right (Allée des Épinouses) for 1.5 km until you reach a short, steep climb of 50 m that will really work your calves.
(16) Turn left towards Domino and, at the end of this road, turn right for 200 m then turn left onto Avenue des Bouriennes towards Les Sables Vignier. You’ll come to a cycle path.
(17) Follow it straight on to La Cotinière.
(1) At the first junction, turn right towards the port to return to the starting point (S/E).
