Combe Curnier and the Cournillon valley

The first section is a gradual climb through a unique landscape. The second part of the ascent is steeper, winding through scree and foliage, and can sometimes prove quite challenging. The return route follows an easy forest track through the varied landscapes that the Ventoux has to offer.

Description of the walk

Park at the Combe Curnier car park, near the hamlet of Les Colombets.

(S/E) Follow the path uphill; it is unmarked but easily identifiable and has no junctions. The climb is gradual, though steeper in places. Continuing through this canyon, you will emerge onto a forest track after a good hour.

(1) Turn right and continue along this flat path; very soon, a yellow marker indicates that you should turn left for a further climb to the upper part of the ridge, with Mont Ventoux in your sights. You will reach a crossroads marked with a Yellow Cross.

(2) Turn right onto a much more sheltered path. After a short stretch on a more or less open, flat path, follow a stony valley until you reach another crossroads.

(3) Keep left and, via a steep climb and a few sections through scree and under trees— sometimes requiring some agility—reach a forest track at the summit.

(4) Take this path to the right to begin the descent. Continue along the ridge above the Vallon de Counillon and follow this path to reach the crossroads at the hamlet of Les Fébriers. Here you will rejoin the GR®91, which shares the route with the GRP® of the Ventoux Massif.

(5) Turn right and follow the red and white GR® markings straight ahead to return to the Combe Curnier car park (S/E).

Notes

(S/E) Park at the Combe Curnier car park or at the car parks along the GR®, all of which are convenient starting points for reaching the start of the climb.
Between (S/E) and (1): marvel at the height of the cliffs and the narrowness of certain sections in a unique and very wild landscape.
