Saint-Paul Chapel in Clion-sur-Seugne

Vineyards will accompany you throughout this walk, until you reach the hamlet of Saint-Paul. There, a small chapel stands surrounded by lush greenery. A path leads down to the banks of the Seugne, beautifully adorned with flowers. You will then continue through vineyards and fields along the railway line to reach Clion, where a stop is a must at the presbytery, which houses the Clion Craft and Rural Museum.

Description of the walk

Start at the village hall in Clion-sur-Seugne.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, head right into Rue des Oiseaux. At the crossroads, follow the red and whiteGR®360markings to the right, continuing along Route de la Varaze for approximately 700m.

(1) At the junction, turn right, still following theGR®360. After about 350m, take the Chemin de Fontaine to the left and continue to a bridge over the Seugne.

(2) Do not cross it; instead, follow the stream to the springs of Saint-Paul (pilgrims on the Way of St James used to stop here).

(3) Walk to the chapel, then turn right towards the west to rejoin Rue des Sources: you leave theGR® and now follow only the yellow markings. At the bend in Rue des Fontaines, head straight ahead and follow the road as it bends to the left. Ignore the road on the right and continue straight on, cutting across the next road towards the railway line.

(4) Cross the railway line with care and take a path that immediately branches off to the right alongside it. The path veers slightly away and joins a crossroads.

(5) At the wayside shrine, continue straight ahead, then at the stadium, turn right onto Rue du Stade. Cross the railway line again and continue straight ahead onto Avenue Saint-André. Turn right onto Rue de Saint-Onge and left to return to the car park (S/E).

A beautiful, peaceful hike. The riverbank is magnificent at this time of year.
Even after several days of rain, the paths are dry.

A stroll through the vineyards and woods bathed in autumn colours, a windmill tucked away amongst the vines that’s well worth a visit, a little path in a charming village by the water, a bit of confusion as there are two wayside shrines… this walk ticked all our boxes.

A pleasant walk with no difficulty at all. We met some very welcoming locals from Clion-sur-Seugne. The apricot and plum trees along the way treated us to their fruit. When you reach the little bridge, there’s a sign saying not to cross the river, but I’d urge you to do so for about 150 metres to admire an old stone bridge, then retrace your steps. I recommend the village museum, which has a rich collection of fascinating old tools and is run by dedicated and helpful volunteers.
