Circular via the Moulin de la Rochette from Saint-Sigismond-de-Clermont

A pleasant hike in a natural setting crossed by the Rochette and Maine rivers. The landscapes are varied, with vineyards, woods such as those of Le Plantis and various crops, as well as orchards (apples and pears). Along the route, you can see beautiful farms in this pretty corner of the Saintonge countryside.

Description of the walk

The car park is located on the edge of the D253, known as the Route de Saint-Genis, right next to the town hall.

(S/E) Carefullytake the D253 northwards. At the crossroads, turn right and then left into Rue des Moulins. The road runs alongside the Tort river and heads north.

(1) Take the first road on the right, at an acute angle. Continue straight ahead (south-east) and leave the village of Saint-Sigismond-de-Clermont on your right.

(2) You will come to a small road; follow it carefully to the left. Pass Moulin de la Rochette and you will come to a crossroads.

(3) Turn right onto the road called Chemin de Chez Baillarge. At the crossroads (elevation 34), go straight ahead.

(4) Take the first right, Chemin du Petit Pont. When the tarmac turns right, continue straight ahead on a path. Continue to a three-way junction at the edge of a small wood.

(5) Turn right onto a path that goes around the woods on the right. Go downhill, cross a river and go back up the other side to the hamlet of Les Fosses. Then turn left onto Chemin des Fossés on the left to quickly reach the D253.

(6) Carefully follow the road to the right. Take the first path on the left and pass between an orchard on the left and a wood on the right.

(7) At the T-junction, turn right and cross the Bois du Plantis. Take the first path on the right. Continue straight ahead, leave the woods and walk along an orchard.

(8) Turn left onto a path that runs alongside the orchard on the left and a hedge of trees on the right. Further on, turn left and then immediately right to continue north-west through the orchard. At a T-junction, turn right. Continue straight ahead until you reach the D253.

(9) Carefully follow this road to the left until you reach the town hall car park (S/E).
