Description of the walk

The car park is located just above the church in Antignac (approximately four spaces).

(S/E) Take a path heading north-west. Once you have passed between two buildings, the path turns left and runs alongside a small wood on the right. Continue until you reach a crossroads. Then follow the street on the left to Rue d'Antignac (D50). Turn right and follow it carefully to a place called Chez Pitard.

(1) Turn left onto Chez Pitard and continue along the path that follows it. When you reach Route du Four à Chaux, turn right and follow it carefully. Pass the place called Le Pinier.

(2) Take the first road on the right and wind your way between the vineyards. Turn left onto the first road, which runs between a vineyard on the right and a wood on the left, to reach Chez Morin. Continue straight ahead to take the road opposite. Continue along the path that follows it towards the south-west. The path enters a wood. Further on, turn left onto a path that quickly joins a cross-path at the edge of the wood.

(3) Turn right onto this path, which soon enters the woods and joins a farm track lined with vineyards at the end of a clearing on the right. Turn left onto a path and continue to the next junction.

(4) Turn left onto the path between two vineyards before reaching the edge of the Bois de chez Blanchet. Further on, the path crosses a clearing before reaching a T-junction. Turn right and then immediately left onto a path that heads eastwards along the edge of the Bois de chez Blanchet on your left, then turns right as it enters a clearing. Continue straight ahead until you reach a road and take it carefully, turning left.

(5) When the road turns left, take the path on the right that heads south, leaving another that heads east. The path runs along the edge of the Bois de chez Cartron. Continue to a four-way crossroads. Take the path on the left that crosses the Bois de Chez Cartron. When you leave the woods, the path joins a road, which you follow straight ahead towards a place called La Bauche.

(6) Just after passing through this locality, turn left onto the path that leads into the woods. Continue until you reach a T-junction.

(7) Turn left and follow the path until you reach a wider forest lane at a T-junction. Turn right and follow the forest lane. The path crosses the Bois de Chez Grelet. At a four-way junction, turn right onto the path that soon arrives near Chez Grelet. After passing the property on the left, take the path on the right that leads to the Bois des Hirondelles, climbing up into a clearing before crossing the woods and coming out onto a small road.

(8) Turn left and carefully follow the road to the village of Antignac. At the junction with the D50 road, you will see a beautiful property opposite. Turn left and carefully follow the road that leads to the church (S/E).

Worth a visit

Antignac, commune of Saint Georges d'Antignac

Saint Pierre Church
The small Saint Pierre Church in Antignac, built on its platform and surrounded by a small cemetery, appears to date from the 12th century. Indeed, its double-arched portal on semicircular pilasters, decorated with a band and surmounted by a central window, is characteristic of this period. All this remains modest in the case of this church. The simple rectangular nave leads to the semi-circular chevet, which has retained its Romanesque openings with monolithic lintels. Its vault is cul-de-four. The square bell tower, built on a Romanesque base, is quite high and covered with a more recent slate spire.
Movable objects: 17th-century silver chalice, painting, altar.

Clion
Clion-sur-Seugne is a rural commune with a population of 794, located on the edge of the wooded hills of Haute-Saintonge and a few kilometres from the Gironde estuary.
Two-thirds of its 1,584 hectares are surrounded by La Seugne and La Maine, two rivers popular with fishermen.
The parish church of Saint-André is Romanesque and dates from the 12th and 14th centuries, having been remodelled in the 16th century. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1909.
The Saint-Paul Chapel, located in the hamlet of the same name and overlooking a fountain, is believed to have been a former Templar chapel.
Since 2011, the commune has belonged to the "Villages de pierres et d'eau" (Stone and Water Villages) network, a label initiated by the General Council to promote exceptional sites with the distinctive feature of being located on the edge of a body of water (sea, river, pond, etc.): Pont aux Ânes, source of Saint Paul.
Les Douves de Clermont: overlooking the River Maine, this tumulus could be an ancient motte-and-bailey castle, as its name suggests.
