A drystone shelter

A short circular route starting from the car park at Saint-Hymetière church. Situated at an altitude of over 440 m, the church is nestled on a terrace of glacial deposits. The route will take you towards the Caborne du Bœuf. An impressive 20-metre-high portal opens up in front of thefirst chamber.
A pleasant walk overlooking the Valouse Gorges.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park near the church of Saint-Hymetière.

(S/E) Head towards the pond indicated by a yellow sign. Make your way to the church and its adjoining cemetery.

(1) Turn right onto Chemin des Bourbes and walk along the pond. Keep right at the next two junctions to reach a T-junction with Chemin Au Frene.

(2) Turn right again onto the unnamed path that crosses the fields. You will arrive at the drystone shelter car park.

(3) Head towards Moulin de l'Île via the small path on the right and descend – be careful as it is quite steep. You will reach La Caborne du Bœuf, a lovely, cool drystone shelter.

(4) Head towards Sous le Saillet, a small path that runs alongside the river and then through the meadows. You’ll reach the junction of the D56 and D56E1 roads.

(5) Turn right at a 180° angle onto the D56E1 road and follow it until you reach the car park near the church of Saint-Hymetière (S/E).

The natural site of the Drystone Shelter of Boeuf, with its "caves", is well worth a visit.
A very pleasant hike

This walk is enjoyable, apart from the 2 km uphill stretch of road at the end.
So it’s better to do this walk in reverse, starting with the descent along the road and then climbing back up the steep path at the end of the walk, which solves the problem of slipping in wet weather.

The Caborne du Boeuf drystone shelter, with its "caves", is well worth a visit.
As for the signposting, we had some difficulty from point 4 onwards.
Although you do see the sign for “Sous le Seillet”, at the drystone shelter several paths open up before you… with no further signposting…
In fact, it was the path marked "chemin secret des moyas-moyas", which we took "as a last resort", that put us on the right track.
The route along the river, through the woodland, is very pleasant. The section running alongside the meadows could do with better maintenance.

A really lovely walk, especially for seeing the caves! It’s a shame we had to head back along the road; in fact, it was impossible to follow the path as it had been blocked off by a wire mesh barrier before point 5, so we had to cut across to the east and crawl under some barbed wire. Yet a few months ago, that wasn’t the case!

A refresh of the road markings (yellow paint) would certainly be welcome. We’ve come across several people who’ve got lost.
