Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the edge of the hamlet of Prats Haut, on the way towards Molines-en-Queyras.

(S/E) Walk through the hamlet and turn right onto the wide Pré Claous track. Leave this track to the right and set off along the footpath. You’ll reach the banks of the Grand Rif stream.

(1) Continue along the right bank of the stream, keeping a short distance from it. You’ll reach a crossroads of paths at the water catchment area, which is protected by a fence.

(2) Cross the stream, rejoin a wider track, then leave it to the left to head off-track into the larch forest. Further up, rejoin the path; follow it to the left to emerge at the edge of the woods. A few metres further on, you’ll find the Cabane de Peyrallas.

(3) Start the descent to the right into the mountain pasture, running parallel to the edge of the woodland. Cross the area known as Pra Comtal. Further on, reach the track for the Canal de Pierre Dimanche.

(4) Cross this track, continue straight down the slope and reach the road linking Prats Haut to Molines. Turn right onto this road to return to the starting car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

A very pleasant walk offering the hut a stunning view of the valley linking Ville Vieille to Saint-Véran.
Make the most of the descent to admire the Demoiselle Coiffée

The trail was useful for following the hike in general, but it was sometimes uncomfortable and required us to choose an alternative route that was more comfortable but did not detract from the hike.

A challenging hike, especially after a very rainy day the day before.
Route through a larch forest with no marked track, a steep climb, then a steep descent through mountain pasture with no marked path.
The final stretch involved crossing a bramble thicket 3 metres wide and 2 metres high to reach the road. There was no way round it.
Fortunately, in autumn the bramble thicket is less dense.
I enjoyed the hike in the same area – the ‘circular walk around the hamlets of Prats’ – much more.
The route seems to have been marked out by a mountain goat
