The Ramegnies-Chin circular route

This circular route takes you through the Scheldt plain between the two villages of Esquelmes and Ramegnies-Chin. It is a rural route along paths and small country roads. Take care when crossing the Tournai road. You will discover the pretty church of Esquelmes near the Scheldt, lined with trees, and the many calvaries and chapels. You will walk along paths lined with hedges and take small passages. At the edge of the Scheldt, you will see Mont Saint-Aubert on the other bank.

Description of the walk

Parking is available in the public car park (access to the cemetery and church), which is also used by a restaurant.

(S/E) From the car park, walk up the street alongside the farm and, at the calvary, turn right and then immediately left onto a tree-lined path. Turn right onto the path before the Route de Tournai and follow this path to the intersection at the chapel.

(1) At the Chapelle de la Miséricorde, continue straight ahead. The path curves into an S shape and then joins the small tarmac road of La Garenne further on.

(2) Turn left onto this street and immediately cross the bridge over the Ruisseau des Viviers. Follow the small road to the intersection with Chaussée de Tournai.

(3) Cross Chaussée de Tournai with caution and take Rue de Bailleul opposite. Follow this road until it intersects with a street coming from the right. Turn left.

(4) Immediately leave the road on the left via a wide path lined with a few houses that leads to Pas à Wasmes. Continue straight ahead.

(5) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead and stay on this path until you reach a tarmac road. Follow this road straight ahead for 100 metres.

(6) At the first house, turn right onto a path and follow it until you reach a paved road.

(7) Turn left onto the road and immediately left onto a path that leads to the village of Ramegnies-Chin. Join Rue de Wattrelos, take the street to the left and immediately take a path on the left that runs alongside houses and the sports field. Just before the cemetery, turn right onto a narrow, shaded path that leads to the church.

(8) At the church, turn left and then immediately right into the street and follow the passageway between the houses, which continues along a path. You will arrive at Avenue de Picardie. Cross it carefully and continue straight ahead along Rue Gilles de Chin, which turns right and joins Chaussée de Tournai. Cross the road carefully, continue straight ahead along Rue de la République and turn left at the first street, Rue des Prairies.

(9) Take this street, which continues along a path. At the three-way junction, turn right and join the Escaut. Turn left and follow the concrete towpath until you reach the church in Esquelmes. Turn left onto the path and return to the car park where you started (S/E).
