A walk through the Gaillac vineyards and their châteaux

From Senouillac, a village perched above the Tarn valley, you will walk through the vine-covered hillsides of the “Gaillacois” appellation. You will be surprised by the wealth of private châteaux such as those of Mauriac, Salettes and La Bonnette, but also by the light-coloured natural stone, which is ubiquitous in all the older buildings.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park by the Senouillac war memorial, at the entrance to the village via the D21. On a clear day, enjoy the view to the south over the Tarn plain and the Pyrenees mountain range.

(S/E) Head east towards Place du Pressoir and continue along the Route de la Linardie. Follow this road for 300 m.

Yellow “heritage trail” markings

(1) Turn left onto a grassy path leading downhill, surrounded by vineyards, and further down, join the Route de la Devézié.

(2) When you reach the hamlet, turn left onto a grassy path heading north-east. Cross the Ruisseau du Gatens and, after a sharp left-right bend, head north-east again. As you approach a wood, go round it to the right and continue straight on through the vineyards at the next two crossroads, before reaching the Route de Figayrade.

(3) Turn left onto the road and follow it until you reach the entrance to Figayrade.

(4) At a left-hand bend, continue north-east along a path below a large house. Further on, this path winds to the right through a copse and leads eastwards to a small road. Cross the Chemin de Catusse further up and continue straight ahead along a tree-lined path to reach the Grande Rue de Fayssac.

(5) Turn left, then, as you approach the village church, cross the Place des Marronniers on your right and take the street that runs between the church and the town hall. Reach Rue de l’École, then turn right into a narrow passage and follow it for 30 metres.

(6) Cross a path to head straight ahead onto a woodland track. The path widens, runs alongside fields before branching off to the east, then north, until you reach a T-junction.

(7) Turn left towards Le Pouget, follow Rue du Pouget to the left, at the corner of a tall stone building, and continue north-west until you reach the junction with Route de Senouillac.

(8) Cross carefully and take Impasse du Basilic, which skirts the Grèzes to the north. Further up, turn left between two vineyards, ignoring the path to the north. Climb gently up to the ridge along a grassy path which leads further on to a small road.

(9) Turn right onto this road heading north-west. At the next three-way junction, turn left, just after a beautiful tree and its rustic bench, and you’ll reach another crossroads.

(10) Turn left onto a stony path that descends gently through the vineyards and reach the Route de Fayssac (D6). Cross it carefully, return to Gatens and pass the vegetable farm shop.

(11) Cross the Ruisseau de Gatens and continue along the Chemin de Timberle (passing a cul-de-sac on your right). Continue southwards to the last house. At this point, the road becomes a grassy track surrounded by vineyards.

(12) As you approach Saint-Martial, this path turns west. Cross the Route de Ravaille and continue straight on along the Chemin d’Hirissou. Near La Maurinié, turn left onto a dirt track which leads, further on, to a railway line.

(13) After crossing the railway line and the road running parallel to it, take the path furthest to the left, which climbs into the woods and rejoins a small road after La Roque. After a left-hand bend, enter Mauriac. Turn right, heading towards the cemetery, before reaching the magnificent Château de Mauriac. Make the most of the enchanting setting to stroll through the park and visit the château if possible (see link below). Take the Route de Salettes on the left for about 100 metres.

(14) At this point, turn left onto a small road which quickly becomes a grassy path sloping gently downwards. Pass a very pleasant rest and picnic area. To your right, perched high up, stands the very pretty Château de Salettes. Further down, at elevation 182, turn south-east and follow a dirt track, below Gaffié, which later becomes a road. You will rejoin the Route de Mauriac.

(15) Take a sharp left-right turn to pass under a railway bridge and continue for some time along Route du Commandeur, before reaching Borde Grande at a wide bend, then Route de Senouillac.

(16) Cross this road carefully and continue straight ahead onto Route des Pavillons. You are now in Senouillac. Continue towards the church, passing it on the right, before reaching your car park (S/E).

The temperature was -3°C for this hike, with a little fog adding to the charm. It was a very pleasant hike through the frosty vineyards.

Nice spot in the middle of the vineyards, but not to be done in hot weather as there isn't much shade. Beautiful château in Mauriac with picnic tables near the church. You can go straight down from Mauriac without detouring via the other picnic area in full sun, and it's just the road.

A lovely route; you can stop for a bite to eat in Mauriac, where there’s a rest area with several tables
A very pretty château, beautiful vineyards, well-maintained, and a magnificent village
This walk isn’t very difficult
You could improve it by turning right after Mauriac instead of left, to avoid the tarmac road

Hello
A lovely walk through the vineyards and past a few châteaux. We could improve it by turning right after Mauriac instead of left, to avoid the tarmac road
There’s a place to eat in Mauriac, 200 metres away; there’s a rest area with several tables
Walk through the very pretty village; I’ve tweaked the start slightly
For me, it’s a lovely walk

A lovely walk in the autumn sunshine, with a picnic at the El Mas rest area (dry toilets available). Unfortunately, Mauriac Castle wasn’t open today… so I wasn’t able to visit it. I’ll be back, as it’s listed among the 50 most beautiful country houses in France!
