Description of the walk

Park before entering Saint-Nazaire-de-Ladarez, in the cemetery car park located at the bottom right of the road coming from Cessenon, Causses and Veyran or Roquebrun.

(S/E) When leaving the car park, turn right towards the village and join the D136.

(1) Immediately take the small road that branches off to the left, heading west and uphill. Follow it for about 700 metres until you reach the junction withthe GR® de Pays Haut Languedoc et vignobles, marked in yellow and red.

(2) Turn left onto theGRP®, a rocky but safe trail that is a little technical in the scrubland. Follow it, crossing a forest path twice before rejoining it further up.

(3) Cross this path and take the trail opposite for about 700 m until you reach a track.

(4) Take it on the left for a few metres and arrive at a small clearing where a few boulders mark the start of the climb up the Way of the Cross leading to the Hermitage of Saint-Étienne. A short round trip of about thirty minutes to see the chapel and the superb view.

(5) Descend to the small clearing and return to the right.

(4) Leave theGRP®, continue straight ahead on the forest path, which varies in width, and join a forest track.

(6) Follow it to the right until you reach the cairn indicating a downhill path.

(7) Turn right onto this path through the undergrowth and descend to a cistern.

(8) Turn left onto the track for a few metres, then immediately take the path on the right downhill to the track.

(9) Follow this track to the right for about 50 metres and turn left onto another track, which you follow until it becomes cemented and you see the first house.

(10) Before this house, turn left onto the cement path and continue to a road leading to a farmhouse.

(11) Turn right downhill, then cross over a stream (or its bed) and continue to the junction with a small road.

(12) Turn left uphill until you reach another track junction.

(13) Turn right at the hairpin bend and reach a new junction.

(14) Ignore the paths to the right and left and take the middle path, continuing uphill.

(15) Turn right to follow the Crouset stream. Be careful when descending into the undergrowth: I have tied some construction tape to a few branches to mark the path. The main thing is to reach the stream and cross it on the stones at the level of the path opposite. Follow this pretty, little-used but visible path along the stream, which crosses two other small streams, until you reach theGRP®.

(16) Follow theGRP® on the right, along a tiny canal that used to bring water to the Moulin Lau mill, which you can see on the left before the coniferous forest. Be very careful if you approach it, as it is in ruins and it is forbidden to go there. Continue to the village, which you will reach at Rue des Pouzadous.

(17) At the crossroads, turn left into Rue du Barry Haut, then right into Rue des Écoles, walking alongside the church. Continue straight on along the D136 (Rue de Béziers) and return to the fork in the road from the outward journey.

(1) Turn left to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

This hike should not be attempted after heavy rain as it involves crossing streams.
No particular difficulties, but I classify it as difficult because of the stony paths (hiking boots recommended) and the need to cross streams.
The route can be split into two hikes, with the hermitage on the left and the banks of the stream on the right.

Worth a visit

It is worth climbing up to the chapel and visiting it (it is usually always open).
For wine lovers, the winegrowers of Saint-Nazaire produce some interesting wines.

Thank you for taking this route and for your comment! It’s a shame about the storm damage… there’s quite a lot of it…

A superb hike, but the recent storms have caused damage between waypoints 15 and 16. You can still make your way through and under the uprooted trees, and a GPS can be useful if you need to stray from the path, as well as for crossing the stream.

Okay, thank you. Too bad about the 'ruined' track!

This is the trail we continue on instead of descending via the path to the village and then climbing back up again. We did this with two separate groups. The result is that we avoid climbing back up a trail that has just been widened by a bulldozer, which is of no interest, so we can get to the second part of the hike more quickly, which is so beautiful.

Thank you for your comment!
It might be interesting to cut between points 8 and 13... but I don't know of any trails!
I'll look for it when I'm back in the area.
Best regards
Happy hiking!

A very pleasant hike to do in clear weather for the view from the top of the hermitage.
You can connect the two wings of the butterfly without going back down to the village by taking the track at the cistern (point 8) to reach the second part at the crossings (point 13).

It's a shame that on 22 January the sky was overcast! The 360° view from the hermitage must be breathtaking. The circular route along the stream is simply magnificent. I recommend it and thank the author.

A very pleasant hike that is a fitting extension of a hike originally marked out by the Minervois-Caroux Tourist Office (No. 72). I enjoyed the view from the Hermitage and the sections through the woods, even if the stretches of track are unavoidable in this area. In particular, the return trip along the banks of the Crouset stream allows you to discover a secluded ravine and a very pretty wild path.
N.B: Like figure-of-eight hikes, butterfly-shaped hikes like this one allow a large group to give the less fit members a rest.
