The Cabrerolles Heritage Trail

The Cabrerolles Heritage Preservation Association has cleared forgotten paths to create this hike, which allows you to discover sites that are emblematic of the history of this area: the Chapel of La Liquière, the Lenthéric Mills and a memorial to an Aéropostale aviator. You will also walk among the vines of the famous Faugères vineyard. The route does not pass by Cabrerolles Castle, but we highly recommend extending your hike with a return trip to this magnificent monument.
Please note: this hike is not recommended in hot weather as there is not much shade.

Description of the walk

In the village of Cabrerolles, park on the main road along the cemetery or in the small car park below the town hall.

(S/E) Head towards Caussiniojouls and, after a few metres, turn right onto a path that descends (wooden sign for La Liquière). This path, rediscovered by the heritage association, will take you to the hamlet of La Liquière.

(1) When you reach La Liquière, turn right onto the road, then further on, take the hairpin bend to the right. Take Rue du Four and go down to the main road. Cross it and head towards Le Sécadou, signposted in red and yellow (GRP® tours in Minervois, Saint-Chinian, Faugères). There is an old wash house on the left. Cross the stream and follow the GRP® which winds its way up until it joins a road. Leave the GRP® trail that branches off in front of you and take the track on the left that runs alongside a vineyard. Stay on this track, ignoring the track on the left, until you reach the Chapelle de Mont Cèze. In front of the chapel, there is a beautiful view of the Biterois plain with the Canigou in the background.

(2) In front of the chapel, take the path that descends to the hamlet of Lenthéric. At the hairpin bend, a cairn indicates the direction to reach the hamlet at a fountain. Turn right and join the D136 road. Follow it to the right (take care), towards Aigues-Vives Moulins de Lenthéric to reach the mills below on your left.

(3) Continue on the D136, cross a bridge and at the first left turn, take the road on the right going uphill in front of you. You are now in the Faugères vineyards.

(4) At the first intersection, turn left. After a series of downhill bends, at a new intersection, turn left again. At the next intersection, turn left again. Cross a stream over a causeway. Stay on the main track and ignore any other paths. When you reach a fork, turn right and go uphill until you reach a stele (see practical information).

(5) Take the track on your right until you reach a crossroads with three roads and tracks.

(6) Then take the GRP® trail that branches off to the right. Follow it until you reach the Cabrerolles car park (S/E).

Notes

(5) Memorial to Georges Payan:on 6 November 1924, a Breguet XIV, a Latécoère postal aircraft piloted by Georges Payan and carrying mail from Perpignan to Marseille, crashed into the hillside near the village of Cabrerolles, probably due to bad weather. The pilot, a 31-year-old former military pilot, was killed instantly. The recoverable mail was delivered. Since then, the wreckage of the plane had remained there, on the mountainside, in a deserted, inhospitable area, surrounded by scree and wild vegetation. A hundred years later, members of Aérocherche, an association dedicated to aeronautical archaeology since 2013, unearthed numerous remains of the plane. On this occasion, Aérocherche and the Association for the Preservation of Cabrerolles' Heritage wished to commemorate this tragic event and pay tribute to the pilot

Worth a visit

(S/E). Cabrerolles Castle is a 12th-century fortress, partly dismantled during the Wars of Religion. The building features a fortified castle chapel. The complex overlooks the village of Cabrerolles and offers a beautiful view.

The Association for the Preservation of the Heritage of Cabrerolles and the municipality launched a restoration project for the site in 1990.
- in 1993, an initial campaign to reinforce and protect the chapel with a perimeter chain, the installation of drainage slates, temporary waterproofing and various repairs was carried out
- in 1995, a second campaign aimed to partially restore the bell tower and repair the entrance bay
- a third campaign, supported by the Faugères community of municipalities, involved restoring the vault and the roof of the building.

The outing is quite pleasant, but the sections on substandard tracks surrounded by abandoned vineyards
Fortunately, the map was helpful, as the written explanations leave something to be desired, especially when it says to turn right when it is actually to the left, and the aviators' memorial is at the end of point 5 just before the descent onto the GRP and not at the end of 4 as indicated. So if you do this outing, make sure you have the Visorando app and that it is working.
This Sunday, 16 November, we had splendid, very warm weather.
and one question: why is this heritage route called " " (Lenthéric and its heritage)? Because apart from the chapel and the Lenthéric mill, there isn't much heritage to speak of.

The description could be improved. No. 1: "Old wash house on the left. Cross the stream and follow the GRP trail, which winds its way up to a road. Be careful to pass to the right of the tomb above the stream, then continue to the road at the top.

Hike taken on Friday, 26 September 2025, with a picnic at the chapel.
Perfect weather that day.
Visually, it was a shame, as you had to strain a bit to see the Canigou. The horizon was a little hazy.

GPS is essential on certain sections!

A wonderful discovery on this route, where we saw around sixty cows with oversized horns! Such beautiful landscapes, with countless arbutus trees.
One regret: we didn't have time to see Cabrerolles Castle.

A pleasant, well-marked GPX route – follow it closely. There are few markers on the ground, but the trails are well maintained and varied. The last section is on a wide trail with virtually no shade. There are a few short, tricky climbs. I recommend good footwear as the trails are very stony and the few descents are quite challenging. Dominant views of the horizon across countryside that is sometimes vineyards, sometimes heath. Ultimately, there are few wooded sections.
Thank you for this route
