Description of the walk

The hike starts in the Cour d'Honneur ofSt Berthuin Abbey.

(S/E) Leave the courtyard and turn left onto Rue du Fond. Then turn left to go up Rue de la Navinne, turn right after the building and continue along the path. The uphill section is quite slippery in wet weather. Follow path 106 to reach the Maupelin quarry.

(1) The path continues above the quarry (⚠️ do not approach), joins Rue du Chepson and descends towards Place du Malpas.

(2) Continue right onto Rue Fernand Colon and take the path on the right at the bend. Cross the Landoir and follow the left bank to Rue du Petit Bois. Turn right, then right again immediately afterwards onto a path to reach a crossroads.

Follow the path on your left, surrounded by twisted hornbeams. Climb up La Taillette (the name of the valley) and cross it to reach the Paradis path. Turn right to reach Rue du Curnolo.

(3) Turn left to go up the street, then turn right onto the path. Turn right at the end of the path and, at the crossroads with Rue du Ranimé, go down the path opposite, slightly to the left. You will arrive below a quarry where the oldest inhabitant of Malonne was found:the Man of Petit-Ry.

(4) Turn left at the hairpin bend to go up Rue du Grand Babin and take the path on the right. Continue up Les Ternes until you reach the path that goes down to the right. You will arrive at a path laid out by a school. Go up it and then follow the road to the Tombois reserve.

:5:: After about 50 metres, turn right and continue along the path to the cemetery and La Tienne Calbalasse. Go downhill and turn right at the T-junction.

(6) Turn right again to take the Voie du Tram until you reach a path descending to the left. Follow it, cross Rue du Fond and enter the car park. You will see the Mutien Marie Sanctuary on your left.

Climb the stairs opposite to reach the Grande Brèche. Turn back to Rue du Fond, turn left and walk up to Saint-Berthuin Abbey (S/E).

A very nice walk to discover beautiful landscapes and views.
The walk is not signposted, but using the map we had no trouble following the route.
It is best to choose the OSM map background (more accurate).

A really lovely walk through woods, along narrow country lanes and small roads. Beautiful views and a very pretty spot. The route is difficult to follow, but that's what makes this walk so exciting – trying not to get lost and searching for the path.

The route is relatively accurate, but we did have some difficulty when the highlighting covered a street name, making it harder to find. The path between points 3 and 4 is not very clear on the map and should be explained in the description (go down between the ruins of the low walls and climb up opposite towards Le Curnolo). We had to exit via the sports centre and join the road through the small wood to descend towards Curnolo, as the path was blocked before reaching the road. For people who find the (very) steep climbs in the woods behind St Berthuin difficult, it would probably be useful to mention this in the route description. But overall, a very beautiful route ;-)

This route could be very good (small wild paths) if the description were better. It is vague in many places. Street names are mentioned in several places, but these names are not visible on site, so they are useless. At the end of the quarry path, you head towards Place du Malpas (it's on the left as you leave the path), but it doesn't go downhill! Thanks to a local resident, we discovered that there are TWO paths on the right at the bend in Rue Fernand Colon. Do not take the most visible one, which is the one furthest to the right! The one you need to take is to the left of the book box and seems to enter private property. Another big uncertainty after point 4: we found the path laid out by a school, but it went downhill (the text says "go back up"). At this point, after searching for the route too many times, we gave up, waiting for a better description or signposting. The Visorando map, which is not precise enough for such a complicated route, doesn't really help either.

From the moment we turned right onto Rue de la Navinne, we deviated from the hiking route because there are no signposts in the woods and the paths are quite unclear.
If you take the wrong path in these woods, it is difficult to get back on the route described in this hike because the paths go in very different directions.
We didn't see the famous quarry, but we tried to get back on the proposed route, which wasn't easy. It's not straightforward, so to conclude, you need to prepare well for this hike to avoid getting lost.

A surprising walk
First of all, positively due to the variety of the route: sparse but wild forest, paths between ruined walls, beautiful views through gaps in the trees and paths through pleasant and varied buildings.
But surprisingly negative, and this is the first time this has happened on our Visorando walks, was the poor quality of the signposting and the lack of maintenance on many paths (nettles grow quickly...and the hedges need trimming), and in our opinion, the text and the map do not match (at one point we had to take a steep slope to reach a path, as the one we were on was blocked along the way). Furthermore, it is essential to have very good footwear as the paths can be dangerous in wet weather. For us, this is not an easy walk.

Be warned, you need good knees. The route climbs up one side of the valley, then descends, and climbs up the other side. It's not very long, but you need to be in good physical shape. I recommend following the route on your smartphone. Some sections are between hedges that haven't been trimmed by the neighbours (26/07/20), so it's not easy to see the entrance to the passage without the app. At the start, it climbs steeply after Saint Berthuin, but don't go all the way to the top like I did! Halfway up the climb, you need to turn right. I'm adding some photos. There are some nice views from up high, but they don't come across in photos as there's no depth ;-)
