Access: From Oloron-Sainte-Marie, take the Aspe Valley (N134 - E7) towards Somport. Pass Bedous, leave Accous on your left and continue. Turn right onto the D239 (altitude 489 m) via the Lescun bridge over the Ansabère stream. Climb towards Lescun.
Turn left at the entrance to the village and follow the signs for "Ansabère". Continue along the Chemin de l'Iset to the car park.
(S/E) Lamareich car park (970m). Fork (signpost). Turn left, heading south on a wide track in good condition. There are few yellow markings. Pass the altitude 988m. Climb this track through the forest, which runs a good distance along the right bank of the Gave d'Ansabère. Cross a cattle grid.
(1) Arrive at the end of this wide track, altitude 1175m (another parking area). Cross the river via the Lamary concrete bridge. Continue climbing, on the left bank of the Gave d'Ansabère, along a narrow, stony track in poor condition. Leave the track that climbs to the right and continue along the narrow track. Leave the forest. Arrive at a very large flat summer pasture area.
(2) Ford the Pédain stream (altitude 1363m). Continue on flat ground. Pick up the yellow markings, re-enter the forest and climb up a well-marked path on the left bank of the Gave d'Ansabère. You will reach a fork.
(3) Continue straight ahead. Leave a grassy track on your right that climbs to the Cabane de Pédain.
(4) Cabanes d'Ansabère (1567m). Drinking water point. At this point, there are two beautiful huts and shelters.
Pass between the two huts. There is a sign on the smaller of the two huts (with solar panels). Head towards Lac d'Ansabère. The path, facing south, climbs up the mountainside. Follow the yellow markings. The path is very well marked, but the IGN map is not accurate. Pass the altitude 1754m and arrive at the lake.
(5) Lake Ansabère, altitude 1859m. Leave the lake on your left. A well-marked path climbs due south. The path is steep but safe, climbing towards the unseen pass. Pass the altitude of 1935m, where the path turns due west. At around 1980m, the path levels out and the pass comes into view.
(6) Pass (altitude 1,985 m). On the right, a small peak (2,010 m) offers views of the French (Aiguilles d'Ansabère) and Spanish mountain landscapes. Head left. Caution: no more markings.
Descend southwards for 50m, following a few cairns, through the summer pastures. When you reach a wet area, turn left and head south-east along a path on the mountainside. This path is very well marked, remains flat and then heads south. Go around a ridge and you will arrive above the Ibon de Acherito
(7). This is a beautiful spot for a well-deserved break.
Return via the same path to the car park (S/E).
. There is even a spring on the opposite side of the lake where you can refill your water bottles!
