Fords and heritage of Tannerre-en-Puisaye

After crossing the various fords on the Branlin, passing through beautiful wooded moors and walking alongside hedges, the Ferrier de Tannerre reveals itself in the shade of this forest, which was exploited for its iron ore in Gallo-Roman times. Travel back in time and into a natural space that is still unspoilt!

Description of the walk

Marked route No. 75.
The route starts from the courtyard of the Town Hall (ample parking available).

(S/E) When you leave the courtyard, turn left and go down Rue Saint-Blaise. Cross the first bridge, then the second, and continue with the church on your left. At the cross street (Rue de Lestrade), turn right, leave the chapel¹ on your left and continue to the first path on the right. Follow it, pass the service entrance to the holiday camp, ignore the side paths and join a tarmac road.

(1) Go down on the right (dead end sign). Cross the Branlin via the ford or the footbridge. When you reach the D7, cross carefully and go straight up for a good hundred metres.

(2) Turn onto the small path on the left, hidden under an arbour formed by the two hedges, which leads to a cross path. Turn left, descend to the first houses and you will come back to the D7.

(3) Cross the D7 carefully and continue straight ahead on the path with a few houses on your left. In front of the farm building, the path turns 90° and enters shaded areas again. A new footbridge allows you to cross the Branlin.

(4) At the top of the path, turn right onto the tarmac road and then left onto an uphill path. Follow this path, staying on the main track. On the left, a window opens up with a view of the hills, the water tower and a relay antenna. You will arrive in front of a farmhouse and a tarmac road.

(5) Turn left onto this road. Continue along the road, lined with beautiful pollarded trees on either side, towards the water tower and relay antenna. Ignore the side roads and pass in front of the only house in Les Jaluzots.

(6) Continue straight ahead to reach Les François. At the stop sign, cross the D22 and set off almost opposite. Continue straight ahead, passing a first path on the right and another immediately after on the left.

(7) At the road, turn right. In the hollow, cross the discreet Pont Patrimonial bridge, which you will discover by carefully descending to the right. Cross the hamlet of Les Mussots, staying on the road.

(8) Take the Chemin des Boulats on the left. The semi-tarmac road ends at the only house. When you reach a crossroads, turn left and go downhill to an open space. Walk a few dozen metres.

(9) Turn left along the hedge. Go up this path, reach the undergrowth and then a forest track. Continue straight ahead until you reach the D160 road. Take it on the left, keeping to the left-hand side.

(10) Just before the Beauregard farm, turn left onto a fairly inconspicuous path. Le Ferrier de la Garenne is now beneath your feet. After walking along the field, in a curve to the left (this first path marked on the IGN map no longer exists), continue to the left (on the right are some old railway tracks in storage).

(11) At the crossroads, take the path opposite, passing a picnic area on your right. Then keep to the main path on your left.

(12) You will come to a clearing with a few picnic tables, a forge and a replica of a low furnace installed by the Ferrier de Tannerre association. Do not go any further (unless you want to take a closer look). Turn right towards the well. Pass this old well on your right and continue, veering slightly to the left.

(13) At the crossroads signposted "Centre ville", head back down to the village following the field fence. Pass under the archway indicating one of the entrances to this site.
When you reach Rue Carreau, go down to the left. In front of Saint-Martin Church, turn right, cross the two bridges to arrive in the town hall courtyard (S/E).

Worth a visit

Between the car park and the holiday centre, note:
- on the right, at no. 15, a private house rebuilt on the site of an old chapel; the apse (semicircle) is still visible.
- on the left, at No. 8, an old mill.
The section between the two bridges is called "L'Ile Saint-Blaise" (Saint Blaise Island).
The large bridge was built in 1902 to replace the single-track bridge over the Branlin River.

- Below the second bridge is a beautiful public wash house.

- At No. 14, on Grande Rue, note the15th-century half-timbered house.

- Saint-Martin Church (the oldest parts date from the12th century).

¹ On the right, after the cemetery, is a19th-century chapel housing the graves of the De Lestrade family and their descendants (owners of the château in the19th century).
On the other side of the road are the site and moat of the château, which was completely destroyed by fire in May 1978.
Leaving Le Ferrier, as you reach Rue Carreau, opposite, a path descends between two walls. This leads to the Le Ferrier wash house.
Le Ferrier de la Garenne, listed as a Historic Monument in 1982, is criss-crossed by numerous paths. Some of them lead to former ore quarries. It is the largest ironworking site in Roman Gaul. The charming walk combines botany and explanations of the history of this place thanks to educational panels.
Thanks to Claudine, Marcel and François for this route and the historical part of the walk.

A magnificent hike starting from a charming village with beautiful woodland.
The signposting has been removed at point 7, but fortunately the instructions are clear and reliable.

A very pleasant hike, even if some sections are quite muddy (hike taken after heavy rain) with many sections on small tarmac roads. I should rather say "tarmac paths" with no traffic and very pleasant to walk on. Le Ferrier is a very surprising place with its mounds and undergrowth. In addition, Tannerre-en-Puisaye is a small town steeped in history with a few old half-timbered houses and a wash house.
Just one negative comment: the GPS coordinates for the start are incorrect; they correspond to a point near Toucy.

Hello REMYTOT,
I am sorry that you were unable to find the path leading to the smithy. I see that you did not use the description, which is a shame, as it contains valuable information on this point.
If the situation improves, this route will soon be signposted in accordance with our inter-municipal charter. You will then be able to try again and discover the site. Another way to explore it will be to take part in the Convergence walks on 29 August 2021, which will include guided tours.

We only used the map route. We had great difficulty finding the Ferrier de la Garenne trail. We had to ask for directions at the riding centre a little further on. The map route for the Ferrier does not seem to be accurate.
As a result, we retraced our steps after 1 km. However, the route is very pleasant.

A very beautiful hike starting from the pretty village of Tannerre en Puisaye. No difficulty. No elevation gain. Beautiful scenery throughout, with the added bonus of access to Ferrier de Tannerre at the end of the hike. My only regret is that there is a bit of tarmac road, but it is not very busy with traffic. I recommend this hike.

A beautiful hike that allows you to discover unknown landscapes in the Puisaye region, with its renovated farmhouses and the Tannerre ironworks.
Some of the paths on the route are very discreet, so it is important to read the description carefully.

A very beautiful hike.
One point to clarify from checkpoint no. 11. Go straight ahead and pass the picnic area on your right, as indicated in the description. A little further on, when you reach a display stand on your left, leave the main path and turn left, then further on you will come to a T-junction (point 12).

Best regards
