Grotte des Infernets and walk through the Bois de la Lare

As soon as you enter the park, you immediately tackle a steep climb. You’ll encounter much narrower paths, as well as unmarked paths and paths that are barely there: it’s a bit like a treasure hunt. So this is for experienced hikers. There will also be DFCI tracks. The off-track sections are no longer than 300 metres, so nothing to worry about. However, you will needto use the GPX track on your GPS. It is a physically demanding but lovely hike. It follows the ridges. It’s a great experience with magnificent scenery. For much of the way, there are also areas of undergrowth to cross, such as the Bois de la Lare, which the route passes through on the descent. The route also takes in the Grottes des Infernets, with views of the spring bubbling up, depending on the time of year.

Description of the walk

The car park is located on the D45A. It is the Parking des Encanaux. There are a good twenty spaces available.

(S/E) On leaving the car park, take the road on the left to the park. On entering the park, take the first path on the right, which climbs quite steeply with wooden beams, a bit like a staircase.

(1) At the junction with a slightly wider path, keep to the right until you reach the Grotte des Infernets, which you can see from the path.

(2) Continue along the path. About 200 metres further on, you will see a path climbing steeply to the right until it reaches the rock. There are some beautiful panoramic views and views of the Roche Creuse, which forms distinctive cavities well worth a detour. Then return to the path and continue along it. You will cross a path but keep to the right. Then, cross a second path that branches off to the left and keep to the right until, at the end of the climb, you reach a crossroads. Take the path opposite until you reach the next junction, which is slightly T-shaped and runs in the opposite direction. Continue straight ahead, staying firmly on this main path until you reach the junction.

(3) This is where the yellow markings end. Turn right, then follow the path to the left until you reach a ford.

(4) After crossing it, there are two paths opposite: both lead to the same place. Basically, you need to go straight on until you reach the Chemin de la Lare.

(5) Turn left onto the Chemin de la Lare until you come to a small path that climbs to the right just before reaching the cistern, number 12, at a pass.

(6) Follow this path to the Crête de la Lare.

(7) Leave the path and head left when you see a hunter’s shelter and an orange ladder on the ground. Continue along this path, which occasionally disappears slightly, until you reach a very wide path.

(8) At the junction with this wide path, take the path on the right, which goes uphill, whereas the trail had been going downhill until now. At the fork, turn left. Follow the trail.

(9) At the junction with a very wide path marked in yellow, take the left-hand path (almost straight ahead) until you reach a very large junction.

(10) Head almost straight ahead, continuing along path number SB101. Continue along this very wide path as it descends. This is a DFCI path, still marked in yellow. Ignore all junctions until the one after the second hairpin bend.

(11) You’ll cross path SB200 on the right, which heads in the opposite direction. Stay on the path that descends straight ahead until you reach the car park (S/E).

A very varied route. We saw people rock climbing. We also saw small ponds with big frogs. Beautiful views, including of Marseille. A hike enjoyed by the whole group.
Best wishes

A lovely route through the magnificent Bois de la Lare, which is even more beautiful in spring thanks to the stunning natural scenery. The route is clearly signposted, so there’s no risk of getting lost if you follow the directions. It’s not difficult, but there are both uphill and downhill sections, so you’ll need to be in good shape. There are no vertiginous sections where you might fall, so there’s nothing to worry about.
Thank you to the creator of this route!
