Description of the walk

The starting point is in the village of Gresse-en-Vercors, at the entrance to the village as you approach from Monestier-de-Clermont. There is a car park on the left-hand side of the road where you can park easily.

(S/E) Leave the car park, head for the departmental road, turn right onto it heading away from the village for about 100 metres, then take the small road on the right. At the end of the tarmac section, take the path on the left which climbs towards the Pas du Serpaton and joins a small mountain pasture road.

(1) Follow it uphill to the Pas du Serpaton.

(2) Continue on to the radio masts.

(3) Go round a small building on your right and take the path which climbs steeply just below the ridge. A little further on, the well-marked path more or less follows the ridge line, passes slightly below the Rocher du Baconnet and then begins to lose altitude.

(4) At the Roc de Cognières, the descent becomes steeper, still slightly away from the ridge.

(5) The path veers away from the ridge at the Rocher de Maladraye and enters the forest. Ignore a path that descends steeply to the left, cross a small meadow and continue the descent to the hamlet of Chauplane.

(6) Cross the hamlet and follow the small tarmac road for about 300 m. After the hairpin bend to the left, look out for a path on the right that climbs steeply; follow it until you reach the departmental road, which you should follow to the right to reach the Col de l’Allimas.

(7) Take the path on the left, slightly above the road, which crosses a large meadow and heads due north. After a gentle climb, the path descends steeply and leads to the car park at the Odyssée Verte site.

(8) Take the track on the right, then immediately turn onto a small path on the left, slightly below the track. Follow this path to the village of Gresse and rejoin the departmental road. Turn left to cross the village, passing the town hall and then the church, before returning to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Although it is barely marked on the IGN map – unless you zoom in significantly – the path is clearly visible all along the ridge. Please note that you are walking through a mountain pasture; please respect the area, do not disturb the animals and make sure to close any gates you pass through.

From the Pas du Serpaton down to the descent into the forest, the landscape is absolutely fabulous and the views are each more stunning than the last. Take care if you have young children with you, as the sheer drops are dangerous.
